And Then She Fell - Analei Skye
Part I
The Breaking
1
Women who’ve fought thousands of battles with achy bones, women who’ve spit out their silence with barbed wire tongues, women who’ve shrugged off their oppression and rebel against the glass they are told they’re not allowed to rise above… We have special names for them: Whore, Spinster, Shrill, Bitter.

The value of a woman isn’t in the curve of her hips,
the plumpness of her breasts or the way her eyes seem to sparkle just for you.
A woman’s worth isn’t for you to poke at, cinch up, cover over with layers of oppression and glossy smiles of servitude.
A woman’s wisdom isn’t in standing quietly by agreeing with your opinion, siding with your biased facts, comforting you when you’re wrong.
No. You mistake a woman’s worth for what she’s been forced to become.
Her real power is in her ability to make you come undone, and then nurture your reconstruction.

We told her once she could have the moon, the stars, the entire galaxy and beyond,
But
only if she’s silent
and only when she’s young
and only if she’s pleasing
and only if she finds someone to take care of her
and only if she’s beautiful
and only if she’s smart (but not too smart)
and strong (but not too strong)
and courageous (but not obtrusively so)
and only if she speaks kindly
and says YES always
and only
and only if
she can give it all up one day, because her body isn’t hers and her dreams are only borrowed.
4
And then she fell
Because she hadn’t yet grown her wings
And then she fell
Because she allowed life to cast her aside,
And then she fell
Into a box she was too big for
And then she fell
Because she fell out of love
And then she fell
Because she hadn’t yet learned her limits
And then she fell
And her world burned up
Because she fell
She lived

Iwish the younger me knew how beautiful I was.
I wish she knew she didn’t have to hide behind makeup and masks of perfection.
I wish she spoke her mind more and pleased less.
I wish she knew following her dreams would turn her blood into fire and she’d finally understand what being alive meant.
I wish she realized she didn’t need permission to be who she
