Chapter One
Nancy Simmons and I had spent the morning driving up to Chevington North to attend her sister's wedding arriving a little after 1pm. The previous night, as we'd done the online booking, we had mischievously booked the Honeymoon Suite of the Château Hotel.
Nancy was not particularly close with her sister - if I'm honest, I'd say she was downright hostile towards her - but we'd decided we were not going to pass up an opportunity for a pleasurable weekend away staying in a fancy hotel.
Arriving at reception, the receptionist cocked her eyebrow disapprovingly when she realized that two lesbian women were checking-in for the Honeymoon Suite.
She stammered I must point out... you know... that room is intended for couples...
.
We nodded and said, Yes, that's why we booked it.
She attempted to appeal to her manager, but he was too engaged in conversation with a guest to notice. She really had no alternative but to continue to process our reservation, albeit with a degree of disdain. Clearly, here in the North, social acceptance of lesbian relationships was still a few decades behind the rest of the country!
