    Not Just A Fellow - S. A. Quinn

    Dedication:

To Amanda who answers my every text and call to let bounce ideas off of her. Thank you

    Chapter 1

I can’t believe this is happening, Kaylee says as she stretches her tired muscles and looks around the room at all the boxes she needs to unpack.

What? Camille shouts from the living room.

Hmmm, Camille has no need to be in the living room. Maybe she’s taking a snack break, grabbing a glass of water....or watching the movers haul in a bunch of the bigger boxes. Probably the movers.

Wow. That box is really big and looks heavy, it’s impressive you can carry it all by yourself, I hear Camille say in a flirtatious voice.

    Definitely the movers.

I walk out of my new bedroom, thinking about how much life can change in the span of a month. A month ago, I was a poor college senior staring down the barrel of graduation with no options lined up and nowhere to go. I’d been freaking out - where would I live? When would I find a job? How was I going to pay back these crazy student loans? And then Andrea the residence hall director had walked in with the best news I’ve received since my acceptance letter to Rutgers.

Hey, KayKay got some mail for you here. Apparently the campus post office has been backed up, so it’s quite a bit. She handed off a stack of letters wrapped in a couple of rubber bands.

Thanks, Andy, it’s probably all junk, I said, grabbing the mail. Who wastes the cost of a stamp when you can send an email?

I planned to dump it all until one of the return addresses caught my attention: Temple Public Relations.

No way, I say out loud as I drop the rest of the mail on the couch and start to rip it open. I have a bad habit of talking to myself when no one is around, probably a symptom of being an only child. I applied here months ago and never heard back.

    Dear Ms. Kaylee Smith,

It is our utmost pleasure to inform you that your application for the fellowship program at Temple Public Relations. Of the sea of applications we received, we have shortlisted 10 individuals to be accepted as the Temple Fellows for the year 2020 and you are one of them.
