INTRODUCTION
So, I actually started this collection of stories as a way to dive into my own world. I’ve been given a cool peek into a demonic underworld, one ruled by dark and light magic with connections to our long-dead spiritual selves. And I begin this as a way to dig into the caves and see what I could discover.
And I want these works to focus on empowered and empowering women, Hispanic culture, and the occult.
Traces of the occult linger in my family and are very prevalent in my culture. And it’s one of the coolest things I’ve wanted to explore for a very long time.
So, I had not initially planned to create an anthology of stories but when I saw this cover, had am impending deadline, and recalled how much I love to write short stories, well it all clicked.
I got my BA in English Literature, which meant we tended to write short stories a couple times. Not as often as we should have but we were asked to write and submit work for publication, practice, or for scholarships. And I really enjoy the short story just as I enjoy other short mediums like music videos or animated short stories. They hold a special place in my heart. They give you a glimpse into the lives and depths of others. They pull you into some real moments.
And it’s sad that the art of the short story is lost among a lot of people. Currently it's like you have to buy another 300-page hardcover in order to get literature. It seems like that’s mandatory. And that's just not the case. Back in Edgar Allen Poe’s time, or the pulp fiction era, or the penny dreadful era, the short story format was totally in. Back then, people had a sitting
, a moment of rest in the day. Were they all reading 300 pages times? Nope.
The short story was acceptable. And loved, given what I’ve read from Poe’s writings.
We have lost the concept of what a short story really is. We miss out on how much fun they are and really what they can do for us as readers. One of my first introductions into
