    UNABLE TO EXECUTE YOUR command, SOPHIE intoned. The impartial, smooth, mechanical, and monotone speech permeated the entire residence. The female voice emanated from electro-acoustic transducers fitted in every room.

    You've selected a wrong icon, Jason said to his wife, Clarisse. In the kitchen near the fridge, they stood at a computer terminal with a twenty-inch touch screen. Clarisse withdrew her forefinger and frowned.

    What did I do wrong? she asked.

    With his index finger, he moved the cursor to the top of the display and a horizontal row of program icons appeared. Below the row, the word SOPHIE and on the next line the words, Super Optimal Programmable Home Integration Environment, were displayed in black colored text against a white background.
