Gameful Isolation: Gameful Life, #3

About this ebook
We all had plans for the year 2020. Some of us planned to travel, others to make bold career moves. None of us expected the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing, or the lockdown of many countries worldwide.
But they happened.
Most of us are staying at home and trying to make the best of it. Many show compassion and camaraderie in these troubled times. Wanting to contribute something of her own, Victoria created the book and video series Gameful Isolation.
In this little book, Victoria shares Self-Gamification, the method she devised that unites anthropology, kaizen, and gamification to form a novel, gameful approach to life. She shares many personal anecdotes of using this universal tool to master the challenges we all face during these times of crisis.
By reading this book, you will learn:
- The reasons for turning our lives into games, especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic;
- About the three approaches that make up Self-Gamification;
- How to play the "Anthropology of Now" Role-Playing Game;
- About procrastination and the brain's fight-or-flight response;
- How to bypass upsets one small step at a time, and why it works;
- How to use fun as a compass, and games and play as inspiration;
- How to be both the designer and the player of your self-motivational games;
- The role of feedback systems and rewards in Self-Gamification;
- About Self-Gamification gameplay loops, and more.

A Free Video Book
Gameful Isolation is Book 3 in the Gameful Life
series. It is also the first writing project I have turned into a video series, or you could say, a video book
on YouTube. Here is the link to the first video (chapter), which leads to all the others in the playlist: https://bit.ly/2ytezac.
1. Introduction
I started writing this little book on March 30th, 2020. It was a couple of weeks after lockdown had started in Denmark, and it was two weeks until Easter Monday, April 13th — the provisional date for lockdown to end.
[An update during the revision of this book: I can now tell you that Denmark started re-opening slowly on April 15th, two days after Easter Monday. The Danish government announced this intention on April 6th, a couple of hours after I finished the first draft of this book. I am writing this update on April 17th, and it is the third day that my son has been to school since it re-opened. My daughter will recommence kindergarten this coming Monday, April 20th. The re-opening phase is a new experience altogether, but the lessons learned during the lockdown still very much apply.]
Four days before starting work on the book you are reading, I published Book 2 in the Gameful Life
series, titled Gameful Healing. On that day, the brilliant editor and cover designer for my books, Alice Jago, and I exchanged a couple of e-mails. In one of them, Alice suggested that I write a blog post, Gameful Isolation,
to share how the approach I developed and call Self-Gamification could help in the current COVID-19 pandemic.
I loved the idea but soon realized that a blog post would be too short a medium to discuss this multi-dimensional topic. So I decided to write a little book. A short one, but still a book. I’ve kept the chapters as brief as possible. There is only one chapter a little over two thousand words, which is a roughly ten minute read. The others are all shorter. I like to keep the chapters or sections of my books a length that most people could read during a short coffee-break. It applies to this little book too.
I recommend that you read this book as
