    Chapter One

    Tabitha

As I watch my daughter Tess leave the cafe with her boyfriend Samuel, I can’t help but feel a tiny tinge of jealousy. I am happy she has found someone. And relieved. For awhile, I wasn’t sure if Tess would ever settle down with someone - she had quite the chip on her shoulder after her father and I divorced - but she and Samuel appear to be content. Now, if only I could find someone.

I knew the divorce was hard on Tess, and I wanted to make sure she knew I loved her, so I didn’t date anyone after her dad and I split. Then when she left town, I busied myself with getting my cupcake shop up and running. Now that it’s moved into Kirsten’s coffee shop, I find myself with more time, but no one to spend it with. And after the brain tumor scare a few months ago, I’m realizing how short life is and that I don’t want to go through the rest of it alone, but in this small town, good men are hard to come by. Especially now that I’m in my fifties.

With a sigh, I begin packing up the pastries. Some will keep for tomorrow, but most will have to be thrown out or given away. That’s always the saddest part of my day, getting rid of the hard work that didn’t sell.

The bell above the door jingles, and I’m tempted to tell whoever it is that we’re closed. Tess was supposed to have locked the door on her way out, and I’ve already shut down the till for the night. But when my gaze lands on the customer, the words die in my throat. He is gorgeous - a literal silver fox. His face is chiseled to perfection - a strong chin, a nose most models would kill for, and a perfect dimple that draws the right amount of attention to his lips.

I’m sorry. I know you’re closing, but I’ve got a bus full of hungry football players, and I was hoping I could take whatever you’ve got left off your hands.

Even his voice is perfect, deep
