About this ebook

Hi. I’m Tony. Bea (my girl cousin) and I are Troubleshooters of the Galactic Federation. We were sent to catch two Naxi 17 boys who were hiding in the forest of the planet Jadti 6 and terrorising the peaceful people of the nearby town. That would have been tough enough, but nobody told us about the jadtigers.

I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

    WE'RE THE TEAM.

Open. The transporter door slid aside, and the Bean and I saw the planet Jadti 6 for the first time. Not much of it – the inside of a gloomy hut with walls of wooden planks.

Waiting to meet us was an old guy, skinny and small – the top of his head was level with my shoulders. He was wearing a welcoming smile and a buff-coloured ankle-length gown, tied at the waist by a dark brown sash. He spoke into a wrist unit, and the translation came through ours. Welcome to Jadti 6. My name is Plop. I am the Mayor of this town.

Greetings, I said. I’m Tony. I turned to the Bean. I’d get a snippy telling-off if I didn’t let her give her own name.

She said, Greetings. My name is Bea.

What is that? Plop pointed to the robot, like a grey flying saucer about a metre across, hovering above my left shoulder.

This is Ching, I said. He has gear for tracking people.

Ching said, Greetings, Plop sir. He had the voice of a friendly young man.

Plop tried to hide his surprise. Greetings, er… Ching. He asked me, Where is the rest of your team?

There’s no rest. We’re the team.

    But… you’re children.

I’m 13. Older than your robbers. And Bea’s brainier.

    But… they are much bigger.

People from Naxi 17 are big. But our leader sent us because we know about young Naxians. He said these ones have been robbing you. Can you tell us about it?

There are two of them. As we walk to the Hall of Justice, I shall tell you what I can.

I had to duck to get out into the wide street. Both sides had low, one-storey buildings with roofs overhanging at the front. Most of them were shops, with their owners standing beside tables of stuff, mainly food, under the overhangs.

The street, grey slabs, had no separate pavements. Pedestrians mixed with people on carts and carriages, pulled by pony-sized horses. It was a busy scene, and colourful, under a sunny sky. The Bean wasn’t much bigger than the people, but my head and shoulders stuck out above them, and they all stared at me.

Plop explained, "The day before yesterday, the two Naxians used the transporter to reach here. They went into a jeweller’s shop and took the best jewels. When the jeweller
