    Abraham - Billy Prewitt

    Introduction

It is difficult to imagine how one man could control the destiny of the entire world for over four thousand years. Many don’t believe it to be so, but when ever was truth bothered by those who refused to believe? At one time, almost all of Europe believed that the earth was flat, but it did not make it so. Why should it be so hard to believe that one man could have such influence?

Many a man has tried to force Genesis to become a collection of myths like the Greek mythology that is taught in schools today. While it is true that the myths of Greece have influenced society in various ways, it is certainly not true that the world is hinged on some principle founded by the Greeks. All attempts to categorize Genesis as mythology stand or fall on this one simple question. Does the text of Genesis indeed control the world as we know it? It says that it would, and it should be easy enough to verify the validity of such an astounding proclamation.

While it is loath to me to mention the contents of Greek mythology at all, it is clearly seen that these fanciful stories full of pagan thought are simply not even true. As a very clear example, Icarus and his father escaped prison by using bird feathers and wax on their arms to fly. His father warned him not to fly too close to the sun or else the wax would melt, but Icarus did not listen. As a result, he met a watery grave when the wax melted.

Any person that has even the slightest knowledge of altitude knows that this story is utterly false. What do we commonly see on top of tall mountains? Snow. Why is there snow on the top of a tall mountain in the middle of the summer? Because it is far colder up there than it is in the valley underneath. There is no danger of wax melting because of increased altitude. It just doesn’t work that way. The Greeks missed it, but that leaves us with Genesis. Do the claims of Genesis in the narratives of Abraham agree with what can be observed in history? If so, what does that tell us about the text of Genesis? Even more than that, what does it tell us about the present and the future?

    Chapter 1

    The Covenant

When God appeared to Abraham, He made a covenant. The particulars of that covenant are clearly spelled out repeatedly throughout not only Genesis but the entire Bible. If taken literally, each of the points of the covenant has global implications. The most basic statement of the covenant is found in Genesis 12:7.

Unto thy seed will I give this land.

Is it possible that this one simple sentence could be the ground root of world history? In order to answer that question, we will need to allow the Biblical text to clearly define the meaning of seed and land, the two key elements of this promise.

    On the surface, the mention
