    Scraps - Anthony Martinez

    Stairway to Heaven

    The promises given

    Taken and spend

    Counting sins and Hail Mary’s

    Missteps

    Dwelling

    Foggy memory

Because it’s easier to rest my eyes

    Wondering

If there’s a place where I could find peace of mind

    Waterfalls

    Why’s

    There’s a place; we’ve all submitted too

    Where we suffer

    Found demons and struggles

    Problems that go unsolved

    And when these issues pile

    I find relief in you

    In your gaze

The trials we all go through

I know I will always have a place in your heart and mind

And no matter what we go through

You’ll be the bright spot that keeps me upright

But before you and I could see the endless amounts of days filled with light

We need to take our steps

    Before that time

    Father

I’m afraid to show you the man you made

Afraid to show you the boy the world raised

Scared to show I’m not okay

    I reached dark places

Made decisions I’ll take to the grave

Your baby is still learning how to behave

Learning how to find his way

    But that doesn’t explain

The reason why I keep you at a distance from my personal business

    I made mistakes

    Some forgivable

    Some I can’t take away

    To be honest, I’m ashamed

To show you there is creases in my exterior

Because I was taught a different way

I don’t blame you for how I was raised

    But my decisions

I should have known to steer away

And trying to learn along the way

That it’s okay to be vulnerable

    To show my pain

That it doesn’t make me less of a man in your eyes, because before I

    You lived a life

And I shouldn’t feel ashamed of mines

    Because you had your time

When you question if your decisions were always right

I don’t want to live this life

Where I can’t tell you my tribulations because I need your guidance to help me find

The man who could eventually raise his own

    Without holding it all inside

    Home

    A baby cries

    My heart dies

An eerie sound when the house holds silence when memories remind

The life that has vanished from sight

    Screams of laughter

    Conversations that came after

    Joy eliminated all possible disasters

    Hollowed

    As time flowed

    Family never gets old

    But the memories we hold

    Within this home

    Etched in space

That replays, as instances, triggering memories that breathe happiness, we made

    Time pulled us away

    Bittersweet

I know it had to be
