    You can see the top of the mountain from your spot on the cliff face. You just need to climb a little farther and you’ll be victorious. You reach for the next handhold to pull yourself up. Just then, your foot slips. Hold on tight. There are no ropes to save you. And it’s a long way down.

    Can you be an extreme rock climber? There’s only one way to go to find out. Up!

    CHAPTER 1

    A CLIMBING ADVENTURE

    You have loved climbing for as long as you can remember. You started when you were a kid, scampering up trees in your backyard. Then you moved on to rope climbing the bluffs at a nearby state park. Now, you hit the indoor climbing complex almost every weekend with friends. You love to practice your skills on the bouldering wall. When you are working your way across the wall’s hand- and footholds, you don’t use any ropes. It’s tough and takes a lot of skill.

    You have climbed in some challenging places. You free climbed in Kentucky’s Red River Gorge. You had ropes and anchors to keep you from falling. But you didn’t use the ropes to help you climb up the rock face. It was an incredible rush!

    You have also been to Red Rock Canyon in Nevada. There, you got to practice on some longer multi-pitch climbs.

    These were tough, treacherous climbs. You came away banged up and bruised. Your hands were scraped raw. You took a couple of bad falls. But now you feel ready for the next big adventure. You just aren’t sure what that will be. One afternoon, your friend Marc stops by.

    Hey, you won’t believe it! he shouts when you answer the door. My parents are taking me rock climbing.
