    GROWING UP WITH A DREAM

    Hernando de Soto was born in 1500 in Jérez de los Caballeros, Spain. His parents were nobles, born in nearby Badajoz. Besides Hernando and Juan, the couple had two daughters, Catalina and Maria. They lived in Jérez de los Caballeros, a bustling market town lined with houses and shops. Even as a boy, Hernando de Soto knew he would leave his southwestern Spanish home someday.

    When his parents died, Hernando’s older brother, Juan, would inherit everything they owned. That was the law in Spain. Younger sons, like Hernando, would get nothing.
