About this ebook
Nation states often engage in espionage and black-ops, even in times of peace. Especially in those times.
Russian Confederation pilot Lieutenant Borislava "Chainsaw" Lukina's task is simple. Find the United Earth frigate Vigilance, and distract them while a spetsnaz agent attaches a tracking beacon to the ship's hull. All they have to do is cripple their own ship and wait to be found, then engage in a risky space-walk with no backup where they'll both be shot as spies if they're caught.
What could possibly go wrong?
A novella set in the Legacy Fleet universe, sixteen years before the events of Legacy Fleet. A prequel to the novel Hammerfall.

Hey Anne,
asked Lieutenant Borislava Chainsaw
Lukina as her dropship slowly spun end over end, the stars drifting from the bottom of her cockpit to the top, do artificial intelligences feel fear?
The shipboard computer said nothing for a split second. An eternity in robot time. A United Earth frigate floated up in front of her ship’s cockpit, blocking out the stars with a wall of metal. The Vigilance. Their enemy. Sort of.
What do you mean?
Fear, for me, is not as you understand it.
Anne’s synthetic voice was free of emotion, but her words carried a strength with them that went beyond tone and articulation. I understand caution. I understand risk and probabilities. I understand when a plan is bad.
Okay,
said Chainsaw. What do you think of this plan, then?
This time Anne’s response was swift. "This plan? Break our own engines in deep space, so that the spetsnaz agent in our passenger compartment can attach a homing beacon to whatever ship comes to rescue us, all the while hoping nobody looks out the window and sees her working?" The yellow q-drive malfunction light flashed on the console, as though punctuating her point. This isn’t a good plan.
Cука блядь. Why did she volunteer for this black-ops shit? Fleet Command had asked her to. Typical. No large organisation was lacking idiots making important decisions.
