Introducing Call Sign Chaos
Call Sign Chaos is a detailed account of Jim Mattis's career, from wide-ranging leadership roles in three wars to ultimately leading the United States defense front. James Mattis is known for his blunt and no-nonsense talk and is admired by soldiers and civilians alike. The author has aimed to provide leadership lessons to young leaders; be it in a business, battlefield or any other stream.
Mattis has divided his book into three parts, namely direct leadership, executive leadership, and strategic leadership. The lessons are delivered in his signature 'no-nonsense' and straightforward style.
Direct leadership is about leading face-to-face and knowing all the people, you lead one on one. In business, direct leadership is basically first-line supervision and most of middle-management.
The second section is Executive Leadership. This is the type of leadership when it's no longer possible to know every person under your leadership umbrella. Mattis states that if you want to be an effective executive leader, you must change the way you lead. You can't know every person under your umbrella; instead, you must learn to lead all through the limited number of leaders you encounter regularly. You must stay in touch with the people on the front line.
The third section is about strategic leadership. In this last and most crucial section, Mattis describes his challenges as a military leader with civilian bosses, where military leaders reconcile war's grim realities with political leaders' human aspirations. He explains how political concerns are as important as operational ones. This leadership is for someone who is at the pinnacle of the organization or entity.
Mattis has also encapsulated the leadership fundamentals that he learned as a lieutenant in three Cs, which are competence, caring, and
