Introducing The Sun Does Shine
The Sun Does Shine: How I found life and freedom on death row' is American author Anthony Ray Hinton's memoir, where he tells the nerve-racking tale of his wrongful conviction. Despite his innocence, he was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death, only to be released after thirty years. The book also details the racist mentality, which is still prevalent in modern-day America.
With the help of co-author Lara Love Hardin, Hinton conveys the horror of his years in solitary confinement. He describes his struggles of being barely able to breathe in the scorching summer heat and eating food that tasted like dust. However, the author is exceptionally positive and makes friends quickly, including the prison guards.
The preface of the book is written by Bryan Stevenson, Hinton's attorney. Stevenson is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, which is a non-profit organization that provides legal help to the wrongfully imprisoned.
Hinton was imprisoned and accused of the murders of two individuals in 1985. Despite a strong alibi and no evidence against him, Hinton was convicted of two counts of capital murder and sentenced to death. In reality, he was in a supermarket warehouse cleaning floors when a restaurant manager was shot around 15 miles away.
The victim of the attack survived and then misidentified Hinton as his attacker. The police searched for the murder weapon and pinned it as Hinton's mother's gun, tying it to all the three murders. Stevenson strongly believes that Hinton was accused, only because he was black. Even the police gave Hinton reasons for linking the crime to Hinton; the jury and district attorney were all whites, and Hinton
