    Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown is the story and autobiography of Anne Glenconner, who spent thirty-one years as lady in waiting to Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth II’s sister. She was also herself the daughter of the 5th Earl of Leicester and the wife of Colin Christopher Paget Tennant, 3rd Baron Glenconner. Born with a silver spoon, Anne’s life trajectory was expected to follow that of her peers. Instead, she not only hobnobbed with royalty but also carved a niche out for herself.

    The book starts from the time Anne was born. She was a disappointment to her parents as she was a daughter to an aristocratic couple without sons. Her gender prohibited her from inheriting her father’s estates and title. Her mother named her Anne Veronica after H.G. Well’s feminist heroine, hoping that she would be strong enough to take care of herself. Her father was equerry to King George VI, and her parents were very close friends with the royal family since she was a child.
