WHY FORT MYERS & SANIBEL?
FortMyers copyAh, the tranquility of Fort Myers (and by Fort Myers, we mean Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Captiva, the whole area).
In the historic
downtown district, you’ll see some interesting architecture from the Victorian period as well as the early 20th Century. There are numerous cafes, courtyards, little shops.
The simple truth about Fort Myers is that if Thomas Edison hadn’t decided to move here in 1885 to mend his health after his first wife died, this place probably wouldn’t be much different from any of the hundreds of little no-name towns dotting both Florida coasts. Fort Myers is about the same distance from Tampa as it is from Miami (150 miles), something people find hard to believe, since it’s on the west coast.
There’s not much else to see in Fort Myers besides Edison’s house (as well as that of his neighbor and friend, Henry Ford). After that, head to the causeway for the 15-mile drive (starting southwest on McGregor Boulevard for 10 miles, then turning left onto San Carlos Boulevard) to Fort Myers Beach. This takes about a half hour if there’s not heavy traffic.
