RUNNING AWAY FROM CHRISTMAS
By Marcelle Dubé
Faith had no sooner turned her cell phone back on after landing in Vancouver than it rang, cutting through the hubbub of the passengers standing up and reaching for luggage. She almost dropped the phone in her elderly seat mate’s lap in her surprise, but caught it just in time and apologized profusely. He looked at her, bemused, and she glanced at the tiny screen. She stifled a groan. It was Lizzie.
She punched the talk button. Hello?
The congested aisle began to clear as passengers began to disembark and a man paused politely to allow her out.
Faith scrambled to get her five-foot-ten-inch frame out of her seat. Where are you?

Vancouver?
cried Lizzie. But it’s almost Christmas!
The aisle in front of her was almost empty and Faith realized with embarrassment that she was holding up the rest of the passengers. She tugged harder and the suitcase finally came free, unbalancing her so that she bumped into the seat back across from hers and dropped the cell phone on the seat itself.
Here, let me,
said the man behind her, catching the suitcase before it could land
