Hypnosis is, maybe, one of the most misunderstood and controversial approaches of psychological treatment. The myths and misconceptions that surround hypnotherapy primarily originate from people's ideas about stage hypnotism. The truth is that stage hypnotherapy is basically a theatrical performance and has about as much in common with authentic scientific hypnosis as many Hollywood movies have with reality.

The truth is, though, that hypnosis is an authentic psychological phenomenon that has legitimate uses in medical practice. Simply put, hypnosis is a state of highly concentrated or concentration, often connected with relaxation, and heightened suggestibility. While under hypnosis (i.e., in a hypnotic trance), it appears lots of people are a lot more open to handy recommendations than they normally are.

The positive suggestions that people are given while hypnotized are described as post hypnotic tips because they're intended to take effect after the person emerges from the hypnotic trance and is no longer under hypnosis.

The ideas given to people under hypnosis seem a fundamental part of the system through which the procedure works. While lots of people won't accept or respond to an up-front, direct suggestion, under hypnosis, ideas seem to enter into the mind-- maybe through the back door of consciousness where they usually sprout and settle as crucial behavior or mental changes.

Contrary to popular belief, those who are under hypnosis are in total control of themselves and would never ever do anything they would generally find highly objectionable.
