Ona, one of the royal heirs, sees the fear sharpening her mother's face as well as the fear in the eyes of the people, and she begins to hear dark rumors of villagers mysteriously disappearing.

 

The peasant girl Yanne cannot find his aunty when the royal visits their village. She disappeared in the middle of royal accompaniment.

Old Maid’s Tales

Ona :

Smoke and ashes!, my sister Elua curses as her horse jolts over a particularly stony bit of road. She speaks too softly for anyone but me to hear, and she continues to nod and smile from side to side, sitting on her horse with the statuesque grace of Teru Dragonslayer.  I’ve told her a thousand times that she wouldn’t wear her tailbone out so quickly if she didn’t pose like that.  And also if she rode more and primped less between our royal progresses. She’s told me a thousand times that I am letting the family down, lolling in the saddle like a farmer’s wife.

No one notices either her elegance or my disgraceful ease.  They stare at the radiant figure on the pale gold horse ahead of us.  At Lady Teine, our mother, the Motherland’s sovereign, wearer and wielder of the Fireseed.
