About this ebook

Aunt Madge is horrified that her Jersey shore town will give big tax breaks to a huge resort. Ocean Alley will be swallowed up in a condo canyon. She runs for mayor to promote sensible progress over massive growth. A lot of people agree with her. Maybe not whoever tried to burn down her garage. Neither she nor her opponent will stoop to low blows, so people are actually talking about the issue. How odd. With the regular Ocean Alley characters, a bunch of laughs, and murder on the side, visit Ocean Alley to find out how it will chart its future.

If this is your first book in the Jolie Gentil series, it’s a bit different than the others. In fact, it’s called an Aunt Madge Story in the Jolie series. In terms of story chronology, it follows "Underground in Ocean Alley" (book 11). In that book, Jolie solves a murder while Aunt Madge happens to be running for mayor of Ocean Alley.

In "Aunt Madge and The Civil Election," events of the crime-solving are muted and the campaign is the focus. If that sounds boring, be assured there is plenty going on, with much of the usual dry humor. I wanted readers to have the story of Aunt Madge’s campaign. It’s told from her point of view rather than Jolie’s, without spoiling the mystery in "Underground in Ocean Alley," should you choose to read it.

This is a 17,000 word "long short story."

Harry manages Aunt Madge’s campaign, and they are determined that Ocean Alley not be overtaken by a large resort development. Aunt Madge says she’s for sensible progress, but neither she nor her opponent will stoop to low blows.

You can read this book to find out who won the election!

Aunt Madge and the Civil Election has the same major characters – Jolie, her husband Scoobie, his brother Terry, and their three-year old twins, Aunt Madge, and her husband Harry. No book would be complete without Scoobie’s best friend, former reporter George Winters, the irascible Sergeant Morehouse, Megan of Java Jolt, and the ornery Lester Argrow. There are other familiar faces, too.

You might enjoy seeing the characters evolve through the series. Book 1, Appraisal for Murder, is always 99 cents on all sites. Books are also in box sets. Paperbacks can be ordered at Barnes and Noble. Enjoy!

    ABOUT ELAINE

    CHAPTER ONE

I KNOW THE EXACT moment I decided to run for mayor of Ocean Alley. Jolie and Scoobie said they hoped to buy a house near the Cozy Corner B&B so Lance and Leah could grow up near Harry and me. We were ecstatic.

Six hours later, Mayor Corrigan announced that the wanted the city to grant major tax incentives to Shoreline Investments to build a resort in Ocean Alley. Almost as an aside, he said the firm would need to purchase a few downtown properties to make room for the facility. I knew our Jersey shore town would never be the same.

Ocean Alley's mix of bungalows, small apartment buildings and quirky businesses -- nearly all of frame construction -- gives the town its allure. If the resort were built, it wouldn't mean all of the smaller residences and apartments would vanish immediately. However, the resort would create an incentive for people to sell to developers who wanted to build larger complexes.

Even though I’m in my mid-eighties, I’m all for progress. I simply don’t define it as changing the character of a town that survived the Great Hurricane of 1944 and Super Storm Sandy in 2012. I want my grand niece and nephew to be able to walk to school and go to the small grocery store rather than drive to the big one on the highway.

As a widow for decades, I can darn well make my own decisions. But Harry and I are a team, and I said I wouldn’t run for mayor unless my husband shared at least half of my enthusiasm.

He had to think about it for a couple of days. He ultimately decided that he moved to Ocean Alley after retiring because he had enjoyed visiting his grandparents here as a child. The town he loved would vanish. Eventually, Ocean Alley could turn into a condo canyon.

And it would be a narrow crevice. Ocean Alley is two miles long and twelve blocks deep, a small town in Miller County, the smallest county in the state. We sit near the well-to-do real estate of Ocean Grove and the working class town of Asbury Park, and we are a blend of both. The Jersey shore at its best.

The window of opportunity to retain our quality of life hinged on the mayoral election in May. The vote to give the resort tax incentives was the week after the election, and I hoped if I won handily the city council would see the resort was not popular with residents.

I made all these points from my podium on the Ocean Alley boardwalk. Cheers rose – not deafening, but definitely loud. Madge Richards for Mayor!

A glance showed Jolie’s husband, Scoobie, and his good friend George. I tried to ignore them as I finished talking to the owners of boardwalk businesses and any tourists who happened to be around. Since it
