    INTRODUCTION

A dream is a revelation we receive when we’re asleep. It is an adventure of the curious mind into the land of knowing more. More about His Creator, himself, others and the universe. This may include a series of voices and words, images and thoughts or emotions and sensations we experience in our sleeping life.

You can call visions waking dreams and refer to dreams as sleeping or night visions.

Dreams and visions are both like viewing a sequence of pictures and action scene after scene on the screen inside one’s mind or heart. The difference is in your physical state. In a dream, you’re completely asleep. During a vision, you’re half or totally awake. It is like dreams deal largely with the mind, but a vision involves the spirit. John’s visions on the Island of Patmos was so vivid that his spirit was before God’s throne. Paul, whom I believe was talking about himself in 2Corinthians 12, described his vision as something like an out-of-body experience. Paul prayed for the spiritual eyes of the Ephesian Church to be opened to see spiritual things. Some dreams and visions are messages from God. Others are Satan trying to trick or terrify us. And sometimes, it’s just our mind replaying and remixing what we’ve fed it with (Ecclesiastes 5:3).

Whatever occupies your mind can influence your dreams whether love or lust or God or the devil. I often see and hear of people who have dreams of what frightens them. I remember a young lady who went to visit her sister. Before they slept, the sister told her stories of how evil the man who owns their building was. She was so scared. While asleep, she had a dream and saw the same man pursuing her with a cutlass. She woke up very frightened. The dream never played out in real life. It was just her mind displaying her fears. When armed robbers invaded my neighbourhood, one time, people had nightmares of thieves invading their houses, stealing from them and shooting someone. Those robbers never came back, the dreams were just their mind expressing its registered fear from the past events.

People may have dreams based on past events stored up in their brains. Not every dream has its origin in God or Satan. Your perception or suspicion about other people may also impact your dream. You may constantly see them in your dreams, doing what you expect them to do in real life. Someone you believe is wicked physically may never be kind in your dreams.

People who are so engrossed with their vocations may likewise have dreams revolving around them. I remember one time when I was in High School. I used to dream about the subject I read the most. These dreams were two types. The first was on my mind’s preoccupation with Mathematics, Biology and other subjects. The second was the Holy Spirit revealing exams questions and answers before time.

People’s secret ambitions and desires can also impact their dreams. A minister who has an ambition of preaching overseas may dream of that coming to reality. Someone who wants fame and popularity may dream in accordance to that.

I often warn people concerning making marriage decisions based solely on dreams and visions. The Holy Spirit and the Bible should be our primary guide. It is common for people to have a dream or vision of someone they desire to have for a spouse making them their partner. Their dream can play out their secret desires or fantasies for them to enjoy in their sleep. This doesn’t mean that God or the desired partner approves the union. Marriage works by the agreement of two individuals and one God (Amos 3:3). No individual is under any compulsion to wed another person just because of a dream or prophecy. One-sided love or conviction isn’t good at all, it has to be mutual.

I remember when I was much younger in ministry and single. I received countless prophecies, dreams and visions from either pastors or parents who preferred me to marry their member or daughter. Also, from sisters who wished me for a spouse. None worked out. The convictions weren’t mutual. God forced no person upon another through dreams and visions in the Bible and He won’t do so today. He presented Eve to Adam. Adam confessed his love for her and she didn’t object. Or let’s put it this way: God displayed Eve, Adam approached her, and she followed him without objection (Genesis 2). God’s role is to guide, ours is to decide. No one should coerce.

    THE TEMPTATIONS OF JESUS

Satan is a deceiver. The temptations of Jesus in the wilderness were pictures, visions and thoughts that Satan put into His mind. He wanted to deceive Him out of God’s purpose for His life. Jesus responded with the Word of God and defeated Satan. That’s how to respond to our dreams, visions and other spiritual encounters today.

When it is the Lord, we should respond like Mary. Praying, Let it be to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). If it has an instruction or warning, we should heed, for obedience is better than sacrifice.

When it is Satan, we should respond like Jesus, using the Scriptures to counter and nullify what he says (Mathew 4; Luke 4).

When it is our mind, we should renew it with the washing of water by the Word of God (Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:25).

Often, I read the Bible into the midnight and play audio Bibles throughout the night. Most of the time, I end up dreaming of Bible verses. Sometimes, a faceless Man would take me back in time and history to where some Bible events took place and explain them in prolonged visions.

I know it is the Holy Spirit who comes as a Faceless Man. No one explains the Bible and spiritual things better than He does. The atmosphere in your house will impact your dream and visions.

One of the recurrent experiences I have in life is walking into a place for the first time and discovering that I've been there previously. I may not remember what dream or vision took me there earlier, but everything will look familiar. I could even predict the later thing or event that would happen or the next person to walk in. I've seen things before they happen and people before I met them. Sometimes, I have visions at the early morning hours, that’s a sneak peek or summary of how my entire day would go. There are times, I tell folks what to expect on a particular day and it will turn out correctly. I believe in dreams and visions as long as they line up with the Scriptures.

    I SAW THE LORD

One sunny afternoon, while I was five years old, the Lord Jesus appeared to me in mama’s little room. My life has never remained the same. I was in front of a standing mirror and eating biscuits. Suddenly,
