Introduction
Where is one to begin? There is a purpose behind this publication. You have already seen the cover artwork and the dedication, and from that you have surely guessed that I am a Christian. What most readers will not know is that this has not always been the case.
For any genuine Christian it is never the case that they were always a Christian. No one is born Christian—nor are they baptized into it. Every human is born evil—including me—because we are all born with rebellion reigning in our hearts. It is the saddest of stories—indeed of Truths—that the vast majority of us never turn from that path.
It has often been asked, How do you call a dead dog?
The answer, of course, is that It don’t matter how; he ain’t comin’—he’s dead.
When we enter into this life we are all in that same predicament: spiritually, we are dead, and unable to respond to any call from the LORD however He might call. We are dead. We cannot respond, we cannot hear, we cannot understand, we cannot comprehend, we cannot apprehend, we cannot choose, we cannot discern anything of the spiritual realm. We are dead, and the only thing that is ever going to change that is if the LORD should choose to raise us up spiritually from that dead state and only then call us to Himself, at which point we will, without fail, respond to that divine call.
The poetry in this book is a chronicle of sorts of the time during which the LORD was raising me up and drawing me to Himself. There are some things to keep in mind as you read. Most importantly is the fact that I was an atheist—of the most virulent variety. You will see the transformation taking place. In fact, there are a few times during which I was receiving a poem that I was uncomfortable with what I thought it was communicating, so I adjusted it. Therefore, feel free to cautiously adjust the gender pronouns as you read in order to uncover the Truth being communicated.
Keep in mind also that a friend of mine, one Karen Geary, assisted in the editing of some of these poems. This collection would never have been were it not for her assistance—and most importantly, her faithful friendship. She is, indeed, a treasure in her own right.
