About this ebook

This booklet is an attempt to tell a story of a young entrepreneur trying to win in business, hence the company name: Duffer. Ultimately all lessons are mastered, the plan is executed, the competition is held off and the customers are saved. However, before success wins the day there are many trials, tribulation and failures to be experienced. My hope is to expose the “greenery” new entrepreneurs may have, impart some valuable lessons through storytelling so they can be avoided in reality.

    Foreword

When I was a new Infantry Officer at Ft. Bragg, NC, I was introduced to an old book known as The Defense of Duffer’s Drift.  In the story, a young British Army officer is tasked with defending a strategic position.  He makes a series of mistakes which lead to the total annihilation and surrender of his unit.  However, the naïve and inexperienced lieutenant gets to relive the battle over and over through a series of dreams.  The setting remains the same, but with each dream the lieutenant is able to learn from his failures. He uses these lessons to improve his chances in the next dream. It takes a total of six dreams (the battle fought six times) and a total of twenty-two lessons until the young lieutenant is successful in holding the drift and surviving the battle.

The book shows the totally logical and by-the-book approach the young lieutenant uses to deploy his forces, and the absolute disasters that result.  The lieutenant slowly learns that it is only through combat experience and the application of beyond-the-book knowledge that the proper tactics can be used for victory.  It certainly helped me to understand how green I really was, and how much I needed others to help with my education, for surely I would not have the luxury of reliving my failures.

This booklet, then, is an attempt to tell a parallel story of a young entrepreneur trying to win in business, hence the company name: Duffer.  Ultimately all lessons are mastered, the plan is executed, the competition is held off and the customers are saved.  However, before success wins the day there are many trials, tribulation and failures to be experienced.  My hope is to expose the greenery new entrepreneurs may have, impart some valuable lessons through storytelling so they can be avoided in
