Poul Anderson

Poul Anderson (1926–2001) grew up bilingual in a Danish American family. After discovering science fiction fandom and earning a physics degree at the University of Minnesota, he found writing science fiction more satisfactory. Admired for his “hard” science fiction, mysteries, historical novels, and “fantasy with rivets,” he also excelled in humor. He was the guest of honor at the 1959 World Science Fiction Convention and at many similar events, including the 1998 Contact Japan 3 and the 1999 Strannik Conference in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Besides winning the Hugo and Nebula Awards, he has received the Gandalf, Seiun, and Strannik, or “Wanderer,” Awards. A founder of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, he became a Grand Master, and was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. In 1952 he met Karen Kruse; they married in Berkeley, California, where their daughter, Astrid, was born, and they later lived in Orinda, California. Astrid and her husband, science fiction author Greg Bear, now live with their family outside Seattle.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    INTRODUCTION

The Sales Pro Meets His Mentor is an inspirational and thought provoking story that involves Pete, the main cartoon character from my book The Sales Pro. In this book, Pete and his mentor explore life-building skills that reinforce the knowledge and motivational elements needed to get to the top and stay there.

The consistent message within the book, delivered through conversations the mentor has with Pete, will offer you answers, direction and guidance to maintain and continually develop the highest level of resilience against anything that could sway you off your path to sales pro.

During your sales career, the reality is you won’t get every sale. You’ll wait weeks for a promised call back that will never happen. Your customers will make promises and then change their mind; they will agree to buy and won’t be able to get the financing or budget approved. A decision maker who has agreed to purchase may leave for another job before the paperwork is completed, and you’ll have to start all over again with the new contact. The other reality is that the majority of your sales colleagues will become easily swayed from their goal or be unwilling to raise their standard in order to progress, and they’ll do their best to distract you too.

That’s why I wrote The Sales Pro Meets His Mentor. It’s for those of you who could benefit from a mentor to help, advise or support you when these challenges occur or during the tough times.

Take advantage of the wisdom of the mentor and use him as your guide on the road to success.

    THE MEETING

A year had passed since Pete’s initial telephone conversation with Julian, his mentor. He had been busy advancing the skills he had learned from The Sales Pro , which was the book given to him by Julian. He had also been enjoying working as a salesperson in the new environment Julian had directed him to—a welcoming one that had offered him not just a job but an education on the advanced selling skills and strategies in the profession of sales. There, he also had the opportunity to meet new people and form close friendships.

The telephone rang. Pete answered it and a beam came over his face. It was Julian. They spoke for a brief moment, and then Pete put down the phone, picked up his coat and ran out the door. Today was the day he was finally going to meet his mentor, who had been traveling for almost a year.

Pete walked the half-mile trip through the country lanes until he arrived at the mansion on the hill. As he walked through the gates and up
