About this ebook

A compiled history of my third great grandfather, Benjamin Gardner (1800-1875). A true Mormon Pioneer, he suffered persecution in Illinois and Iowa, then captained a wagon train that traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1852. In Utah, he set up and operated two important grist mills in Weber County, Utah. He and his wife, Electa Lamport, were the parents of twelve children, eight of whom lived to reach maturity

    Preface to the 3rd Edition

In the eight years since I first completed this history, a number of details regarding Benjamin and Electa’s lives have come to light that should now be included.  In addition, our personal circumstances have changed significantly.  We no longer live in the historic Randall home close to the site of the Blodgett-Barker mill in North Ogden, where Benjamin was the miller for twelve years.  Dealing with the effects of advancing age, we downsized and now live in a condominium in Ogden City.

Finally, about ten days ago, on the weekend of May 10-12, 2019, we participated in one of the reenactments of the driving of the Golden Spike, performed as part of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad.  Coincidental or not, that event changed life in Utah forever and marked the end of operation of the grist mill in North Ogden.  If you are re-reading this account, I hope you will agree that the added information provides even more evidence of the remarkable nature of these stalwart people.

    Preface (Original)

    Regarding the latter, we
