PREFACE
Aloha kakou. My name is Peter Leiataua AhChing a medical student at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii. I am also a Hawaii Federal and State Courts Officer. I am of mixed heritage, a product of Polynesian Samoan-German and Hawaiian-Chinese families from Samoa, Hawaii and California. My strong Polynesian heritage is derived from being a son of the Alii paramount High Chief Lei’ataua Le Sa of Upolu Manono, Samoa. My strength in the Sciences has been demonstrated with published articles in the journals of MOLECULAR and CELLULAR BIOLOGY 1998, GENETICS 1999 from Albany Medical College in New York and the PACIFIC HEALTH DIALOG in 2001 from the John A. Burn’s School of Medicine, University of Hawaii.
I wrote this book to educate about the Polynesian family and the interconnections of Samoa, Tahiti and Hawaii. The research was initiated in response to controversy and negativity that was upon ‘The ROCK’ Dwayne Johnson’s return to Hawaii and the announcing of his movie role as KING KAMEHAMEHA in 2002. Dwayne Johnson is a very proud American of Samoan-mix ancestry like me and likewise our efforts are similar in that we aim to build healthier and positive communities all over, but especially the Polynesian communities in the State of Hawaii and Polynesia at large.
I was born in Polynesia and grew up as a native speaking Polynesian of Samoa and Hawaii. At about 15 years old, I moved to live in California and then to New York where my studies in Science Research and Medicine developed from the following institutions: California State University of Fresno, University of California San Diego, The Scripps Research Institute, Albany Medical College, New York and now Hawaii. Along my travels, not much negativity was directed towards my Polynesian Samoan heritage on the mainland United States. However upon my return to live in Hawaii, I experienced a difference of how people interacted. These interactions involved a lack of sensitivity and understanding about the Polynesian people. Hence, this education project to further understand the Polynesian entity and to ameliorate negativity from activists and a rival movie producer against the Polynesian Samoan heritage of ‘The ROCK’ Dwayne Johnson in 2002. Ethnocentrism from these political activists got me questioning the interconnections between the native Polynesians of Samoa and Hawaii, my heritage.
Research in different areas of Science has led to the connections detailed in my work based on these questions: (1) Whats the latest science research on Polynesian origins? (2) Where did Polynesians come from? (3) How are the people of Western Polynesia connected to the Eastern Polynesians? (4) What are the theories on Polynesian origins? (5) What is the problem with a Polynesian Samoan playing the role of a Polynesian Hawaiian King? Why is this even a controversy? (6) How will making the Kamehameha movie affect community relations in Hawaii between Hawaiians and Samoans? (7) How will this movie affect Hawaii overall?
These questions have been answered with scientific research
