This book corrects many previous errors pertaining to the Virginia Immigrant Ball Family in 1650. Most previous records we have attempted to validate show the Virginia immigrants as originating in Berkshire; however, there is no evidence whatsoever to prove Berkshire as the place of origin for the Virginia immigrants. The information presented in this book is compiled from fresh research, onsite if or whenever necessary, and it is independent of all prior works that purportedly document the Virginia immigrants. To validate this research effort, we included a separate historical record compiled using evidence that pertains only to the Ball family of Berkshire, specific to the manors of Barkham and Wokingham. It can be found as an Appendix in order to prove no member of that family ever immigrated to Virginia - That record is validated to later than 1701. This book also denies the credibility of the long touted Ball Family Committee Report as submitted to the Library of Congress.

We believe it essential here to state, of the Virginia immigrant descendants of this man, a few of them adopted and practiced Quakerism; thereof, researchers should be prepared to locate and prove facts using the available Quaker Records long ago published by several sources. Although the Quaker Faith is passive, there is sufficient evidence of very strong military support by the Ball families of the several states during the Revolution. During our research we have located and included necessary evidence to generally invalidate, and prove the early genealogy of the several (more than twenty different distinct separate lines) Ball families in America were highly conflated, and confusingly confabulated.

We searched many British Archives for the surname and could not prove it. We then tried Dutch and German to no avail, but with the help of a local teacher, we proved the Surname ... Grondiche ... is Dutch, and translates into German ... Grundlage ... which means ... Base ... or ... Basis. There is no translation from Dutch to English. This lady was the daughter of ... Austen Grondiche ... of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, but she was baptized in Yorkshire. Her father was a Goldsmith who lived in Gargrave in Yorkshire, which is near Skipton and Skipton Castle. He held a leasehold in London in the Watling Street area.

This particular Ball immigrant family to Virginia lived adjacent to the Johnson immigrant family to Virginia of concern herein ... they lived adjacent to one another at Stepney in Middlesex County England for at least three generations, perhaps even longer prior to their immigration to Virginia. Moreover, these two different surnamed families removed from England and departed Gravesend bound for Rotterdam aboard the same ship ... together. They left from Gravesend shortly after October 28, 1639 when all males age 15 or more took the Oath of Fealty. Moreover, on December 2, 1639 both messauges were vacant. December 2, 1639 is a significant date - It was the date when the annual quit rent was due. Both families had previously married relatives of one another at least once; fact validated by the following proofs.

Information: 1581, London, , Greater London, England. William lived in Stepney, Middlesex. He was a member of the Waterman Livery of London, and styled as citizen, waterman and Gent. Sometime late 1639 before his grandson Richard was born October 1639, the family fled to Rotterdam. - It appears his whole family removed to Rotterdam simultaneously; records in the London area cease before 1640 for all members of this family, and we cannot prove any estate records in P.C.C. We do not know what date the family landed in Virginia, but certainly before 1650 when the first records of land ownership begin. Besides, this William Ball family already had close relatives living in Virginia since William’s brother Richard landed in 1617. We have not located any trace of the two daughters who married in the London area ... Susan & Sarah or their husbands - thus we opted not to enumerate them in this record, but proved them in the family event. They may have stayed in London, Rotterdam, or removed elsewhere.

An act of Parliament established the Company of Watermen and Lightermen in 1555 in London to control the Watermen on the River Thames responsible for movement of goods and passengers. It is the only ancient City Guild that was formed and controlled by Act of Parliament.

Although some members of this family married into families of Quaker Faith, we think it is essential to state: the American descendants of William and Hannah that settled thence lived in Virginia and Maryland were staunch supporters of the Revolutionary War. More than one descendant son of this family were either on the staff and or closely associated with members of the staff of General, and first President of the United States, George Washington. So far as we have proved two descendant women of this William Ball family married Quaker men, but there is no apparent familial relationship problems resulted discernable as a result.

Information: Richard was sent to Virginia to help set up a shipping facility for his father, then was told to stay in Virginia where he worked for Hugh Crowder, a business partner of his father and uncle. The situation worsened when Richard’s father did not care for his young wife with child alone in London as he should have, which resulted in a very serious rift between father and son.

Richard was in London during the Muster of February 16, 1625 - Richard owned small tracts of land in Elizabeth City County, Warwick County, and Lower Norfolk (later Norfolk County) Virginia. His family supplied products used in the ship building business such as cast bronze fittings, and tools used in the trade. So far as we can prove only his son John turned to farming, and his sons were the Ball family of Essex County Virginia. Members of this family are very difficult to track and prove.

After William’s first son Richard’s birth, records cease for this family in the London and Stepney areas, and we have not been able to prove any Estate records for any member of it in England. The famed Ball Family Association Committee report of 1900 patently established a false record for this man’s youngest son, Joseph Ball, by proving him born in ... Lancaster County Pennsylvania instead of ... Lancaster County Virginia. For more than 100 years, descendants of this Ball family have with great rigor of investigation into that historical record have attempted to muddle through it; thereof, no semblance of a logical presentation is even remotely possible, proving proper family connections nearly impossible. That publication conflates and confuses five distinctly different families with surname ... Ball ... to the extent, any family that intermarried with a person of any of the five conflated families has proved a pedigree of little value, which validates the travesty of assumption without proofs. There was one claim in that report, which boggles minds of modern researchers beyond belief. Thereof, the estimated 500 descendants of who at the time shortly after the death of a man with surname ... Ball ... could receive the sum of up to $100,000.00 each. $100,000.00 x 500 persons equal the total of $50,000,000.00 an unbelievable amount for the era of concern.

Will of William Ball

In the name of God, Amen, I William Ball of ye County of Lancaster in Rapp. being, Praised be God, in good & perfect health both of Body and Minde doe make & Ordaine this my Last will and Testament in Manner and form following (vis) Imp’et I bequeath my Soule to God almighty my maker and Creator in his Assurance of ye pardon and Remission of all my sins through ye death & merits of Jesus Christ my Savior & Redeemer and my body to ye Earth from when it Came to be Decently Intered and for my Worldly Estate my just Debts & final Rights first is Charged I give & Dispose as foll:

"Item. I give and Devise my Land & Plantation whereon I Live, Express in two pattens containing 540 acres to my Sone William Ball and his heirs forever never ye less it is my will & Pleasure yt my loving wife Hannah Ball be & Remaine in full possession thereof together with all household goods & Servants both Christians & Negrowes with ye ____ of Cattle of all Kinda excepting what is pticularly bequeathed out of wch never ye less not to be Delivered till ye ______ of her rights for & During her natural life provided she soe long Remaine a Widdow and therefore it is my will and pleasure that what shall remaine in her possession be Inventoryed & Valued by her Selfe & my two sons between them themselves to ye together and if She Should Marry againe She may then Enjoy on her pporionable parts according to Law. Item, For ye Other part of my Estate Consisting Chiefly in Merchandiseing goods & Debts it is my Will and Pleasure ye same alsoe be Inventoryed & Valued as before and that she my s’d wife likewise enjoy 1/3 part thereafter and and that ye Remainder, together with what shall be Over and above her 3rd part of household goods, servants & Cattle of all Kinds & Not hereby pticularly bequeathed bee soone After ye termination of her Right thereby lymitted Divided into parts, theree whereof I give and bequeath to my Son William Ball and his heirs forever & ye other two parts to my son Joseph Ball & his heirs forever their part of Marchantdizeing goods and Depts to be forthwith Delivered. Item, I give and Devise my land in ye freshes of Rappk. Cont’g by patent 1600 acres to my two sons William and Joseph and to each to their heirs forever to be equally Divided between them wihtout any Advantage of Survivorship if either of them should decese before Demission. Item, I give and Bequeath to my son William and his heirs my two negroes Called Tame & Katie and his Wife & to my sone Joseph and his heirs my negro Tony & Dinah his wife, the Negro Girle & her negro boy James to my wife to dispose of between my two sons of their Children & noe other wise when her Rights shall Determine Either by death or Marryage. Item, I give unto my sons William and Joseph Whatsoever Either of them stands indepted to me upon Acco. in my book. Item, I hereby nominate & Appointe my two sons William and Joseph Executors of this my Last Will and Testament to act together in all things in ye Ordering and disposing of ye Estate according to the true Intent and meaning thereof by a due pformance of ye Several Exceptions pvisoes and Limitations therein contained hereby Renouncing all former Wills & declare this to be my last Will and testament by Witnessing the same wh, my hand Seale this 5th day of Octr. 1680, and in the 2 and thirtieth year of our Sovereigne Lord King Charles ye Second.
