    The French Family Murders

    Young Sarah Brower looped the reins around the brake handles of the borrowed buggy she was driving and jumped to the ground. She stood a moment gazing at the yard and the front of the cabin. A small corral was at the edge of the clearing. She immediately recognized her friend’s long-legged mare that John kept in a pole enclosure in the yard. Her frown deepened as she walked toward the porch. Just as she was about to go up the porch steps the door opened suddenly. A burly, bearded fellow stood glaring at her. A skinny woman lurked closely behind him.

    Stop where you stand, missy! bellowed John Hubbard.

    Sarah did as she was ordered. One foot was on the steps and her hand on a porch post.

    Who are you? I’ve come to visit the French family, Sally declared with an angry voice.

    Hubbard glared at Sarah through narrowed eyes. His skeleton of a wife tugged at his arm. Hubbard pulled away from her, giving her a scolding look.

    They are gone, missy. Not here.

    "The entire family just up and left? Sarah questioned.

    Yep. That’s about it. Now, you be gone and don’t come back.

    Yeah. You be gone, mocked the woman." She giggled, her eyes gleaming.

    Concerned about the French family, Sarah looked at the two Hubbard’s with concern.

    Aaron French would not just up and leave, Mr. Hubbard. He is crippled as you know. Your claim is downright absurd and you know it.

    Hubbard’s face turned beet red with anger at the young girl’s statement.

    "They did not leave walking, miss know-it-all. You should think twice before you brand a person a liar. That’s absurd. I am a God fearing man. It is you who are at fault.
