    Introduction

Bayside Church of Granite Bay has been my church home since I was in the seventh grade. The church was only about 3 years old at the time, and it has since grown to be a very influential church in the community of Sacramento, but also nationally and internationally. Recently, Bayside has started a Freedom Project, an expositional study of 2 Timothy. I decided to translate, explain, and apply this letter in a commentary series on my blog and subsequently in this book in order to prepare myself for this series at my church.

Please join me in reading, marking, learning, and inwardly digesting this personal letter from Paul, so that we might be enriched and encouraged to stand firm in the faith along with all of the saints in Christ. In this commentary, I provide a translation of the entire letter first, and then I provide a translation, explanation, and application of each logical unit of the letter.

You may find more contents for studying the Bible at my personal blog, iakobou.wordpress.com.

    The Second Letter to Timothy

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, a beloved child, grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I make unceasing remembrance concerning you in my prayers night and day, while remembering your tears, I desire to see you, in order that I might be filled with joy, I remember the sincere faith in you, which dwelled first in your Grandmother, Lois, and in your mother, Eunice, and I am convinced that it is also in you. For this reason I am reminding you to rekindle the gift of God, which is in you by the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but of power, love, and prudence.

Therefore, do not be ashamed of the witness of our Lord nor me, his prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God

    who saved us

and called us with a holy calling,

    not according to our works,

but according to his own purpose and grace,

which was given to us in Christ Jesus

    before time began

    but now has been revealed

by the appearance of our savior, Christ Jesus,

who on the one hand abolished death

but on the other brought life and immortality

    through the gospel,

in which I was appointed as herald, apostle, and teacher, and for this reason I suffer these things, but I am not ashamed, for I know the one in whom I have put my trust, and I am convinced that he is able to guard my deposit on that day. Hold to the standard of sound instruction, which you have heard from me in faith and love that is in Christ Jesus; guard
