    Chapter 1 : Sam and the busy bee

    It was a bright June morning and Sam the seagull was strolling along his favourite path in Longmore gardens. It was his favourite because as well as the flowers looking and smelling beautiful it was next to the summer house built for visitors to sit and rest. When the visitors sat down to have their lunch they would often throw the crusts of their sandwiches to Sam who was always grateful for a snack. 

    This day there were no visitors and so Sam was giving his attention to some tall blue lupines. As he watched them a large bumble bee with yellow stripes and a white tail flew in. It settled on a flower and proceeded to poke his head inside one of the trumpets, buzzing loudly. It then came out and immediately flew into another trumpet. Its back legs had orange pollen attached which it had been collecting for a while.

    Excuse me, said Sam but what are you doing?

    Being too busy to stand around chatting was all the bee said to Sam as he suddenly flew off in the direction of a hedgerow disappearing into the undergrowth. Sam was most curious. Where was the bee going in such a hurry and would he ever see him again?

    That afternoon Sam was back at his favourite spot. He had been given some nice cake by a small girl and her mother who were having a small picnic. He was just passing the blue lupine when the bee emerged from a flower. Good afternoon my grumpy friend. Said Sam. Too busy to chat I suppose?
