    Ch1: The Stranger on the Bus

    I was walking through downtown coming back from my friend’s house. He lives just outside of the place. I figured it would be easy to catch a bus there, but I wished it wasn’t so busy.

    As far as the eye could see, it was just buildings and people and roads and cars. It was a rather pleasant place to be, though, at the same time.

    I came to a bus stop that didn’t look as busy as the others. I sat down on the bench. There was a stranger sitting across from me. A girl, about my age. I didn’t think much of it, though. She looked rather raggedy. I wondered if she was  homeless. I did have to admit, though, she was pretty.

    I couldn’t believe that the bus wasn’t here yet. Whatever happened to frequent transportation?

    Of course, with my luck, the bus showed up immediately after I thought that. The strange girl boarded the bus with me. When she sat down, I could see how far off and lonely she looked. I couldn’t just let her sit there staring out the window. I decided to sit next to her.

    She seemed surprised at the fact that someone had chosen to sit next to her. She stared at me for a moment and then continued looking through the window. I had to talk to her.

    I said to her, Hi. How are you?

    She stared at me blankly for a moment, and then stuttered, I-I’m f-fine.

    I continued, My name’s Josh. What’s yours?

    She replied a little stronger this time, M-My name’s Anna.

    There was a small moment of silence. She appeared to be baffled at the fact that anyone had taken interest in her.

    Eventually, she asked, "Why are you talking to
