About this ebook

Ruby had a quiet life in Northern England. In a matter of days that quiet life was changed when the werewolf, Vincent Miller, claimed that she was his mate. Will she choose to trust him and accept the awaiting dangers or let him go?

This is the second of three prequel novellas to the Nowhere Duet. Each novella can be read as a stand alone as each has a HEA. They can also be read in any order, but for the ultimate reading experience I would recommended the following order:

Prequel Novellas:
The Siren’s Mark
The Wolf’s Ruby
The Outlaw’s Lady

Novels:
Finding Love in Nowhere
Twin Mates in Nowhere

This is also the order they will be published in.

I wanted to give a thank you to my mentor and fellow author Marsha Ward for her guidance and assistance in helping me become an author. She has been very patient with me throughout the whole process and my many questions.

I also wanted to thank my family who has supported me all these years to help me see my dream come true, even when they had to listen to some bad story ideas or the same story over and over.

    Chapter 1

Ruby was picking her way down a rarely used path through the woods. Her basket was resting on her hip. It was early spring, so the woods could be a bit cool. To ward off the chill, she had her red cloak around her shoulders. However, she had her hood thrown back, allowing her blond curls to hang free. She hummed to herself, smiling, and her blue eyes sparkled as she looked around.

She lived in a small village near the woods located in northern England. People in the village always said not to come into these woods, but she had come in here anyway several times, as there were lots of herbs, nuts and wild onions here that she liked to collect.

She saw a patch of wild onions and knelt to gather them. She heard a growl behind her and spun around. There stood a large brown wolf. She had been told there were wolves in this forest, but in all her eighteen years, this was the first one she had ever seen. Her eyes met the golden eyes of the wolf. She and the wolf both froze.

As she stared at him, the logical part of her mind told her she should be afraid of him, but she wasn’t. All she wanted to do was to go to him. She slowly rose to her feet. She took a step towards him. He shook his head, breaking eye contact, and it brought her to her senses. He growled, and she jumped a bit.

You shouldn’t be here, his voice rumbled.

    Her eyes widened. You talk.

Yes, but you need to leave.

    Why?

    It’s not safe here.

I always come here. She paused. My name's Ruby. What’s yours?

It doesn’t matter what my name is. You need to leave and never come here again. Now go home. I’m sure your parents will be worrying about you.

She should be more cautious, but she found herself continuing to talk to him. I live by myself. My parents died a few years ago. I have a grandmother who lives five miles outside of the village and only comes to visit occasionally. I live in the village though, in the house that my parents had.

Why are you telling me this? You do know that I could eat you right now and no one would know.

She shrugged. If you wanted to eat me, I think you would have done it by now. Plus, it's not like anyone would miss me.

A breeze blew through the trees, and he stiffened before sniffing the air.

You need to get out of here now, and never come back, he said.

But I don’t want to go. I still have items to gather.

I don’t care. Get out of here.

He scanned the woods before looking back at her. He growled and bared his teeth at her. Her eyes widened. He took a step towards her.

Go! he said with a growl.

She turned and ran all the way home. Once inside her home, she put the lock in place. She leaned back against the door and tried to slow her breathing. It was at that moment she remembered that she had forgotten her basket and onions.

She sighed. Guess it will just be bread tonight for dinner.

She took off her cloak and hung it on a peg by the door. She went to the cupboard and pulled down a towel wrapped loaf of bread. She broke off a chunk and put the rest of the loaf back. Since her parents’ death, she took on various sewing jobs for people in the village in trade for the necessities to get by.

Her house was situated on the outskirts of the village. No
