Cindy cringed and rubbed her eyes. She was fifteen when she wrote that letter, but four years later, she still wanted the same thing.

She had always been a skinny little thing. Mom told her that she would grow up in time—that she would just have to wait. Now Cindy was in college, and all the freshmen thought that she was a high school student. It got her invited to a lot of parties, but it didn’t get her any dates at all.

Spending Christmas Eve with her family did not help. She felt like any minute, she might be demoted to the kid’s table. Even worse, her little cousins looked curvier and more grown up than she did. The only thing that made her feel better was the ton of food that she had eaten.

Cindy’s stomach growled. The party was over, but the emptiness remained. Maybe a midnight snack will help me get to sleep. At least there are still some of those candied yams leftover. Cindy crawled out of bed, put on her slippers, and walked quietly downstairs so her parents would not hear her.
