HOW TO THINK AND GROW RICH
Welcome to the third book in our five-book Master Class series. In this volume, we are talking about a fresh approach to Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, probably the most famous and influential self-help book ever written. This book has been a classic among people who are interested in self-development, self-improvement, and personal advancement since it was first published in 1937. It’s hard to believe that more than 80 years have passed since the book’s initial publication, because people are still discovering it today.
People have heard the name Napoleon Hill, and the phrase think and grow rich
has a certain familiarity within our culture. Yet there’s still a new generation of people who are walking around telling themselves, I’ve always been meaning to read that book. My friends, coworkers, and neighbors recommended that book to me somewhere along the line. What is it all about? How do I enter it? How do I get into it?
And then of course there’s a whole population of people who have been reading the book for years, or decades, and they regard the book almost with a scriptural veneration.
I meet people who tell me that Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich turned their lives around. That they discovered it when they were faced with a dead end in life, when they really felt they were up against the wall, and that book made a core difference in their lives, and got them moving toward some sense of personal aspiration, achievement, or helped them find their footing in their career, in their households, in their place in the world.
Then there’s a third subset of people who wouldn’t go near such a book, because they think a title like Think and Grow Rich
sounds gauche, or unspiritual, or inappropriate for serious people. I run into some of those people, and I tell them, "Whatever walk of life you’re in, whether you’re an artist, a soldier, a school teacher, a professional, an entrepreneur, or a graduate student, you are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t read Think and Grow Rich. Because the book is very simply an instructional guide to turning ideas into concrete actualities."
Whatever it is you want to do, whether you want to bring justice to the world, whether you want to start up a business, whether you want to attain a higher degree, whether you want to retire from the military with an officer’s rank, whatever it is that you want to do and to strive towards in the world, this is a book that will help you concretize your ideas into reality. It is that simple.
Napoleon Hill called it Think and Grow Rich because he was writing in the depths of the Great Depression, and he had a willingness and an instinct for meeting people right where they stood. That instinct has proven correct, because here we are moving towards the centenary of the book’s original publication, and people are still aroused and attracted by that title, Think and Grow Rich, as familiar as it sounds.
The truth is, most everyone in life feels a deep and keen need for material resources, for money, as well as a sense of career advancement, personal and professional advancement. The book, in this unapologetic and unembarrassed way, responds to that need in a manner that cannot be ignored. You cannot ignore a title like Think and Grow Rich.
One of the things I shared in volume two of this Master Class Series, The Million-Dollar Mind, is that the pioneers of self-help had a genius for communication. Learn from their titles, learn from their phraseology. They knew how to reach mass numbers of people. They were deeply sincere, and they were willing and prepared to defend
