Sankar turned on his side. He was wide awake.
The radium dial clock read five O’clock. He sat up noiselessly, rubbed his palms and massaged his face. As he yawned and stretched himself; he remembered that it was their wedding anniversary.
It was already five years and they had stepped into the sixth!
A wry smile escaped his lips. He turned to look at Chitra sleeping next to him.
A fair, round face, parted lips, strands of hair carelessly spread over her face… She was the same Chitra- the one he had got married to five years ago. But only at the outer appearance level…
Sankar got up with a heavy heart and picked up the cigarette packet and matchbox from the side table and walked out to the balcony.
It was a pleasant September morning in Delhi. He could see the red and white silhouettes of the flowers in the dim light.
Sankar lit his cigarette and leaned on the wall. He was reminded of the young, lovely Chitra.
How chirpy and pleasant she was!
Chitra was related to him; a maternal uncle’s daughter. Her father owned a mill in Coimbatore.
He had met the chatty and bubbly girl at a family wedding in Coimbatore. Chitra was nine years younger to him. He was in the final year of his B.A. while she was in the ninth standard.
A wide gold bordered pavadai (long skirt) with a matching blouse, a gold waist belt and large earrings! She looked really stylish.
As she flitted around with a bowl of sandalwood paste; she tripped and all the sandalwood paste had spilled on Sankar seated close by. An aunt saw what had happened and berated her saying, What are you rushing for? Shouldn’t you be careful?
What is your problem aunty when he himself is not complaining? Did I do it on purpose? I tripped and the sandalwood paste spilled. Anyway, it will keep him smelling nice! Don’t scold me for no reason…
She then turned towards Sankar and said ‘sorry’ with a smile and ran away.
He hadn’t remembered this incident but Chitra had mentioned about it soon after their wedding.
It wasn’t surprising that Chitra recalled what had happened when she was ten years old or that she remembered those fleeting meetings she had with him here and there. What was really amazing was the way she had discreetly expressed her desire to marry Sankar when her marriage was being discussed.
Sankar had completed his B.A. and M.A. and gone to America for his MBA with the help of his brother who had settled in the US, and after his MBA, Sankar worked in New York for a couple of years.
Why should both brothers settle abroad? Isn’t all the wealth, assets and comforts we have here enough?
His mother complained non- stop. Sankar couldn’t take it anymore and returned to India when he was thirty. Sankar got a fantastic job in Delhi and settled there when Chitra’s father landed at his doorstep out of the blue one day!
Chitra’s father had already spoken to Sankar’s parents and they had agreed. If Sankar gave his approval, the engagement date could be decided.
Sankar was astonished. She was nine years younger. Must be a child! How can I…?
But all his apprehensions vanished the moment he saw her the following week. Beautiful, long hands and legs, a moon-like fair, round face, beaming and bright…. He was blown away seeing her!
His heart filled with happiness; he agreed for the marriage immediately and got engaged to her.
He got to know that she had been in love with him all the while only when they went
