    CHAPTER 1

The app is wrong, Nica Ortiz said, sliding into the seat across from her best friend. Tally looked up from her phone, a goofy grin firmly in place. No doubt she was texting with her new boyfriend.

Nica skidded her cell across the table. Look who it matched me with.

Tally glanced down at the screen and her dark brown brows shot up a full inch. Whoa.

I know, right? Is it too early to drink? Because I feel like I need a drink.

Tally frowned. Nica could tell precisely what she was thinking too. The app is wrong, she told her. Her best friend opened her mouth and Nica cut her off. If you say, the app is never wrong, I will scream.

The app is never wrong. Remember, it worked for me.

Nica hurled a long-suffering sigh. Like she could forget. Tally had landed Atlanta’s most eligible bachelor, Mason Blake. The man was gorgeous, successful as hell, and utterly and completely in love with her. Every time they went out together, Nica was deeply impressed with their compatibility, their blossoming love, their ease with each other…

And maybe a tiny bit jealous too.

It wasn’t that she wanted Tally to be miserable. She didn’t at all. She was thrilled her best friend had found someone so perfect for her, but she also wanted that for herself—and after roughly a bazillion dates that hadn’t happened.

Nica swiped a napkin off the table and twisted it in her hands, hoping Tally wouldn’t notice how she was shaking. I can’t believe I let you talk me into joining that dating app.

Tally frowned again. ‘That dating app’ is An Indecent Apposal, a super-exclusive, referral-only, possibly magic app for finding your soulmate. If it sounds crazy it’s because it is crazy. She paused. It also works."

Nica raised one brow, letting her think that one over for a moment. Sure, the app worked.

    Until now.

Now, it had matched her with her ex—her extremely gorgeous, incredibly rich, enormously jerky ex. They’d dated for two years in college. He’d treated her like she was The One.

    And then ghosted.

Nica clenched the napkin in her hands, much like she might clench someone’s throat and said, Deacon can’t be my perfect match.

Tally winced. But what if he is?

Then we would’ve stayed together after college.

There. She’d said it and she was pleased to know it only hurt a tiny bit to say out loud.

Okay, maybe more than a tiny bit.

I’m over him, she added, clenching the napkin even harder. Why would I want to go back?

Tally’s eyes bugged in disbelief. Because he’s sex-on-a-stick?

"Oh my God, listen to you! Nica glanced around the restaurant. No one was paying them any attention, but she could still feel her cheeks go hot. You’re on the verge of getting engaged!"

Her best friend shrugged. Doesn’t mean I’m blind. The guy was hot in college and now he’s still hot, but also even more rich. She paused, eyeing Nica. "I know you read that Business Week article on him. Don’t pretend you didn’t."

    I didn’t.

    Tally glared at Nica.

    Nica glared right back.

    I didn’t, she repeated.

Well, you should have. His father supposedly did some weird challenge to both the sons. They have to compete to see who’s going to inherit the company.

A waitress approached their table and Nica quickly scanned the menu, picking out coffee and blueberry French toast. Lots of it, she told the waitress, grinning.

    You got it, honey.

Nica turned her attention back to Tally. Her best friend was studying her—not for ordering the carb fest thank God—but she was definitely thinking hard about something.

    What? Nica demanded.

You don’t have to go through with it. I don’t want you to do anything that will upset you. The app is supposed to help you find someone you’re happy with.

I thought it was about finding your soulmate?

Tally thought for a moment and shrugged. I think sometimes a soulmate is more than someone you’re happy with. It’s the person who opens you up, pushes you to be who you’re supposed to be. Maybe sometimes that’s too much to live with. Her eyes went faraway and Nica wondered if she was speaking from an experience with Mason, but before she could ask Tally shook herself and added, Maybe it’s too painful being opened up all the time.

Painful sounds about right, Nica thought and then realized it actually didn’t. Until the very end, being with Deacon hadn’t been painful at all. It had been sexy and fun and funny—he was the best at making her laugh.

It was the ‘getting over Deacon’ part that had been painful.

They’d had a stupid argument. It had been late and the whole thing had escalated and Deacon had stormed off. She’d called his cell a couple of days afterward, and when that didn’t work, she’d screwed together her courage and called his home. His brother had answered.

    Hello?

Hi, um, Davis? This is Nica, Deacon’s…friend. Is he there?

    Who?

Her stomach had curdled. "Nica. I’m a friend of Deacon’s."

Never heard of you—and he’s not here. The cold dismissiveness had been almost as shocking as finding out Deacon had never talked about her. Davis spoke to her like she was some sort of scum. He left for Amsterdam with Dad, he continued. Company stuff. I don’t have his new cell number. You can call back in a few days and get it. If you want to.

Thanks. She’d hung up quickly and had nearly been sick right there in her dorm room. Deacon’s brother didn’t know who she was? After two years of dating, he’d never mentioned her?

That’s how important I am, Nica had realized, holding her phone in her hands. I mean so much to him, he’s never even mentioned my name to his family.

    And that? That had hurt.

Nica, you’re scaring me, Tally said, pulling Nica out of her thoughts as she reached across the
