    A Brief History of Peru

Known primarily for its medieval kingdom that was led by the mighty Incan Empire, the country of Peru has become a traveling haven for those who seek either a relaxing climate or those who seek history. With such a wide array of history spanning the country from border to border, the country can hardly be investigated completely in the few weeks a tourist is able to remain in there, so having an itinerary for the tour and a brief yet thorough knowledge of the country’s nuances is important.

Perhaps the most notable factor that distinguishes Peru from its neighboring countries is its unique history prior to modern times. In 3500 BC, the oldest civilization within the Americas was recorded when the Norte Chico established their dominance as an official civilization. Since those days, various cultures have experienced both the rise and the fall of most civilizations. From the days of the Norte Chico emerged one of the most powerful empires known to mankind: the Inca Empire. The Inca Empire is noted as being a cradle of civilization, a prestigious honor given to only four other civilizations. Prior to the establishment of the Columbian America, the Incas are recognized as being the largest state on the continent. For its participation as one of the earliest producers of civilizations, Peru is remembered as being perhaps the most important home of civilization.

While the land was inhabited by several tribes and people prior to the 16th century, the growing Spanish army held a particular interest in the land that is now regarded as Peru. The same century, the Spanish Empire would lay claim to the land, directly leading to the establishment of a viceroyalty that began the tedious process of building a government piece by piece. Shortly after, the capital city of Lima was established and the Spanish Empire began to grow the country slowly. The year 1821 held prominence for the country as Peru was officially announced as being independent of Spain. Tourists entering the country will want to pay special attention to tributes and statutes that pay homage to José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar, two of the country’s heroes who helped Peru gain its independence. On an average tour of Peru, most tourists will hear references to the Battle of Ayacucho, perhaps the most important battle in Peru’s quest for independence. This battle, fought in 1824, directly led to the completed independence of Peru and the establishment of a new country. From 1824 until the early 1870s, the country was able to ride a mostly peaceful journey through time as the politics of the country directly aligned with the people’s interests, leading to a time of economic prosperity; however, the end of the 1870s held a severely different outlook for the country as the War of the Pacific began to rage. After the War of the Pacific subsided, the country endured a drastic change to their economy which was followed by a change in power and politics. Historians note this as being the beginning of a downward slide for Peru’s politics, a downward spiral that continues to this day. From that year on, land battles, corruption, economic turmoil, and social conflict had become relatively commonplace in the country. With these battles threatening the future of the country, a new government was enacted under the election of Albert Fujimori in 1990. This election led to the stabilization of Peru, a direct result of the Shining Path insurgency being stopped in its destructive tracks.

With the Shining Path insurgency dead, there was a new hope that Peru would become as other countries and possibly imitate the growing success of the United States; however, new allegations of human rights atrocities enacted by Fujimori threatened the stabilization of the country. Although Fujimori attempted to exonerate his name and maintain his presidency, the mounting calls for his resignation and imprisonment were too much to endure, leading to his resignation. Fujimori would eventually be imprisoned under a life sentence that was only lifted at the pardoning of the subsequent president, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Although Fujimori was largely considered a sheep in wolves’ clothing, he maintains a loyal following to this day, a group of people known as the Fujimoristas. Believing that their beloved leader was ousted prematurely, the Fujimoristas have pledged to remain politically active, leading to the resignation of Kuczynski in 2018. The resignation of Kuczynski demonstrates the unrest of the regime and has effectively served as the capstone on a political environment that cannot seem to please even the modest of groups.

With a growing population of over 32 million people, Peru is beginning to showcase its ability to draw people of different ethnicities and cultures. While Spanish remains the primary language of the country, there are other languages that are accepted as well. Following in the tradition of many of its neighboring countries, Peru is home to many unique forms of art, music, and food that every tourist should sample and will be discussed in more depth in the remaining portions of this travel guide.

Currently, Peru is recognized as a government that operates as a representative democracy, a government that is operated by a group of people who have been elected to their leadership positions by the general public. While its foundation follows the government of most western-hemisphere democracies, the lack of stability within the government showcases the effects of greed and corruption within the government on the people. The country has been divided into 25 different regions and is, despite its fallacies, considered to be among the most eligible emerging markets in the world. The current poverty rate within the country stands at just under 20% and the economy’s consistent growth of 6% every year places it among the continent’s leaders in economics. Peru's economy is founded on the exports and investments of the fishing, agricultural, and mining industries.
