    Acknowledgments

Thanks to my parents who encouraged me to follow the ideas and the dreams that I have and to never give up. My mom, Kecia, is a superhero and following in her footsteps as a writer is an honor.

Daddy, I know you are always the last to know what’s going on, but you are one of my biggest supporters and I love you.

Special thanks to my publishing team, Victoria Christopher Murray and ReShonda Tate Billingsley. Both of you have been a miraculous dream come true. You both have encouraged me and pushed me to be the best. From helping me be clear about what I am trying to express, to picking the best book cover for my work. I wanted to thank you as a team and individually, for always being there for me whenever I have needed you.

Thank you so much Auntie Victoria Christopher Murray for always being just a phone call, a text, a video chat away from helping me through all it takes to get through all the drafts and making sure that the story made sense.  You supported me, you pushed me to be my very best and I appreciate it.

Thank you Aunt Reshonda Tate Billingsley. I was so excited when you showed me the first possible book covers. It was at that moment when I realized, Wow, this is actually going to happen. Thank you for everything.

Big sister I’m a better writer (sibling joke). I’m glad I was able to get inspiration from you.

Thank you to my godmother for making sure I had plenty of books and reading to me before I could read.

Thank you to my uncle David who runs my social media account, for the most part, when I am unable to. He has stood in and acted as me when I couldn’t, and he still was able to display a little bit of me because he has been around since I was a little girl. Thank you for being the best uncle and thank you for being the best social media manager.

Thank you to all the readers and book lovers who have encouraged me to continue to write, followed me for updates and just to see what I was up to. It started on Facebook, all the loyal and great cyber aunties and uncles. It’s because of mostly my cyber aunts that I completed the book. Thanks again for all your support.

Big shout out and thank you to my big cheering team who was in my first writing class that I took with Victoria Christopher Murray.  We were all students in the class, but you all made me feel welcome as the only child in the class. You taught me, you laughed with me, you didn’t make me feel like I was too young to be there. You were the best team and I consider you guys my first cheerleading team. Thank you so much.

Peanut, you didn’t think the book would actually get to the point of being published but you still read everything that I’ve ever written, including writings that others may never see. I can always count on you to read anything that I write. You’re the best cousin ever. I may be a little hard on you sometimes, but it is because I want nothing but the best for you as you’ve always wanted the best for me.

I don’t know if this is even appropriate to put in the acknowledgments. But here it goes: I would like to thank all the 1980s and 1990s R&B and pop musicians that my parents introduced me to. Your music got me through some of the times when I had what most call writers block. I may not be able to name all of you but here we go: Thanks to all of you especially, New Edition, New Kids on the Block, and The Hanson Brothers. And then I think this last song is earlier than the 1980s. My dad plays it every time he writes and that song is:  I Can’t Go For That by Daryl Hall and John Oates.

Last but not least, thank you to all the writers who did all the hard work before I came along. It’s because of your work that I am able to do my stories.

And I haven’t forgotten you, the readers. Thank you for reading.

    THE BOX

The day started out normal, a classroom full of third graders eager to see what was in the mysterious box on the teacher, Mrs. Hansen’s desk. Everyone stood around guessing and sharing what they thought was in the box.

One student said, I think it's cupcakes for the class.

Another student said, No, I think it's something magical.

A student responded, I don’t think magic is real, so it might be cupcakes, or cookies!

Mrs. Hansen stepped into the classroom and all the students rushed to their desks. Mrs. Hansen said, Class, as you can see, I have a special package I want to share with you all after recess. Let's line up and go outside.

The students were all excited and lined up while still discussing what might be in the package.

Recess was fun, and several guesses were made about what was in the box - from cupcakes to magical beans. But then, as they walked back into the classroom the students discovered the package was gone! Mrs. Hansen was shocked and upset and wondered what happened! Who could have done this?

Mrs. Hansen said, Class, we have to find out what happened, but who can help track what happened with results and get the package back?

Then she remembered the best kid detective in the detective business. She wanted a kid because kids could be quick and could think outside the box and what she needed was her box back asap.

Mrs. Hansen sent a message out to Annalise The Kid Detective, who showed up quickly to find out what happened to the box.

    * * *

I had all kinds of questions when I received the call from Mrs. Hansen about the mystery of the missing box: Who was responsible for its disappearance? Could it be one of the curious students? If so, was the student from this class or another? Would a teacher from another class break the Code of Honesty and take the box?

As I gathered my list, I slid the teacher a note asking what was in the box? The
