    About Debbie Mumford

    1

Kristi Lundrigan sailed into Delectable Mountain Quilting, her ankle length patchwork skirt swirling around her legs. She grinned at Mattie Stebbings, her best and most experienced employee. Mattie nodded in acknowledgment as her hands were busy measuring a length of gorgeous deep purple batik print for a customer who stood with her hand resting possessively on a stack of at least six additional bolts of fabric.

Business was good. Barely past their 9:30 a.m. opening and Mattie was already preparing to cut a good-sized sale.

Kristi smiled and said. Good morning, Mattie. She turned her attention to the customer. Thanks for coming in, Eleanor. Did you find everything you need?

Eleanor beamed at her, running her fingers lovingly over the stack of bolts. Oh, Kristi, I just love these new batiks. I’ve got a Double Nine Patch planned and with these… she paused, sighing happily, it’s just going to sparkle.

How wonderful. Be sure to bring the top in when you get it pieced. We’d love to see it.

Oh, don’t wait that long, Mattie added with mock concern. Bring the blocks in as soon as you have enough to lay out the design!

Kristi laughed, waved, and moved to the kitchen to put away her purse, acknowledging several other customers as she passed. What a great way to start her day! She was so lucky that Mattie had agreed to come to work for her.

The petite, dark-haired woman had owned the shop until last spring when she’d been forced to sell in order to cover her husband’s gambling debts. Kristi had been fortunate enough to buy the whole package: building, land, and inventory. Of course, she hadn’t known the reason for the sale at the time. That had come out later, when Mattie’s husband, Gary, had been murdered just outside the shop’s back door.

But all of that was behind them now. The grand opening of Kristi’s new and updated Delectable Mountain Quilting had taken place nearly six months ago, and thanks to her marketing savvy and skillful redesign of the shop’s floor plan, the business was doing better than anyone had dared to hope.
