The Magic Cat - Leandra O'Reilley
For Natalie and Caitlin, who’s love and magic guides me every day.
A story written by a mother for her precious little girls.
Merry Christmas, sweet children.
Preface
IT IS SAID, AMONG SOME, that there is a period in a young girl’s life where magic circles around her. These times are special, as she reaches the threshold between childhood and adulthood. For some, this period passes them by without a hint of magic in their lives. These young girls become adults quickly, and often lose sight of the true magic in the world around them.
Other girls see the magic in many ways. For some, it is a single event, as simple as the leaves dancing in the wind on a cool autumn breeze. For others, it is a grand adventure. It is always true that these girls will carry this magic with them throughout their lives, but the girls who have a grand adventure hold most tightly to the magic around them.
This is a story about two little girls whose magic is a grand adventure, and how that magic will hold true in their hearts forever.
Chapter One
CATHERINE WAS A STUBBORN child. The youngest of two, she often wished she’d been born first. Her older sister Rose was a smart girl, incredibly kind, and exceedingly beautiful. Catherine was, too, but she rarely saw this in herself. She was always worried that her sister was more special than her.
Give that back!
Catherine yelled as Rose reached for a game piece. The two had been playing Candy Land, and Catherine had forgotten to take her turn. Naturally, as the leader and eldest child, Rose decided to play in her stead.
Why should I?
Rose asked. You weren’t paying any attention anyway.
She stuck her tongue out at her little sister.
