The Peaceful Mind: Finding Balance Within Your Emotions and Caring For Your Mental Health, and Recreating Yourself from Within
Andrew thinks that his life sucks. He has received three queries in the office in the past three months and another one could mean indefinite suspension. However, he does not know what to do. Everything just seems to be coming down on him at the same time. As he left the office that evening, he decided to take the LA Metro Rail heading home. Highlighting at the Union station near downtown, Andrew boarded a bus but stopped about five streets before his home. He then decided to take a walk the rest of the way.
The thought of going home also did not sound appealing to Andrew. He is sure to meet a not-so cheerful wife who has lost her enthusiasm for everything. He couldn't also stomach seeing their only child, Jason still in his deplorable state, health-wise.
Life for Andrew and Janet has been so uneventful for the couple in the past four years now. A sick child whose condition seems to defy medical solution, Janet's recent loss of job due to regular absenteeism to cater to their sick son and now Andrew's ever-mounting problems at work. As he walked, Andrew assessed the current situation in his life. As a Sales Executive, the figures have not been looking so good in the past four months and the Marketing Manager can't stand the situation anymore. Now, his job is on the line. "Phew! So what's the way out of this whole mess?" Andrew asked himself!
Part of Andrew's story reflects a lot of people's reality out there. And having a higher emotional intelligence can help you address some of the issues that make you feel like you are stuck in life. Agreed, emotional intelligence will not resolve a critical health situation and more but with a more balanced emotional state, you can get every other aspect of your personal and corporate life back in shape.
This book, on Emotional Intelligence, exposes some of the underlying principles that can help you become a highly effective and emotionally mature person. It also incorporates actionable steps and workbooks to use in improving your emotional intelligence to becoming the person of your dreams.
Are you ready to begin your journey to self-discovery?

The Peaceful Mind - Mikkell Khan
Introduction
One of the greatest secrets in life is the ability to navigate your emotions in a way that helps you play the right card and play it well. We are a product of our emotions and thought processes, but we cannot rely always entirely on our emotions. It is also not impossible to rely entirely on your intellectual ability as the emotional sometimes help strike a balance. However, once there is a distortion or imbalance in your emotional stance, it can affect every aspect of your life, including your intellectual abilities. Therefore, to get the best out of your professional and personal life, you need to learn the art of emotional intelligence.
This book; Emotional intelligence is not just another book on how to become smart at decision making or social interactions. It is a practical guide to help you re-discover your true self. We all seem to get so lost in the pursuit of life and happiness that we sometimes fail to take a pause to evaluate our life outcomes. Guess what, your life will not move in a progressional manner and you won’t become happy by going through the motions. You can only get to a state of total wellbeing and fulfillment once you can locate the epicenter of your being or existence. That is one of the reasons for writing this book.
We all at one time in our lives have gotten stuck maybe due to the rot in our lives or that of a loved one. Such experiences sometimes bring us to the point of self-denial or cognitive dissonance. At other times, we find it impossible to navigate those situations, and then the feeling of despair sets in.
I have had terrible experiences in my professional and personal life. These experiences pushed me to the point of almost giving up. But the principles exposed in this book were some of the tools that helped me get out of each situation unhurt.
Certain impulses and emotional triggers can serve as a roller coaster, putting your life on auto while you watch yourself spiral out of control. But once you can unhook yourself, then you can identify those innate abilities that are meant to help you navigate out of any situation unhurt.
The essence of this book is an appreciation of your relationship with yourself and responses to emotions, thought patterns, and processes. These are the tools to help you validate your feelings and make beneficial choices in work and life.
After reading this book, you should have a clearer picture of your emotional state, what causes friction between your current state of affairs and relationships, and the tools you need to re-focus your life. Your emotions should serve as a compass to attaining true happiness and fulfillment in life. But to get the best out of it, you must understand what your inner trappings are, or in a more simple term, your inner-self.
Are you feeling stuck in the journey of life - professional and personal? Do you feel like something is amiss in your life, the void feeling? Have you lost steam and the will to live? Or maybe, you love the present trajectory of your life but just feel there should be more to your personal and professional life than you currently enjoy. This book will help you get a better understanding of yourself, situations, and aspirations. It will also use practical examples and methods to point you in the right direction to re-igniting the sparks in your life.
However, I cannot help if you won’t apply the principles learned in this book. First, it would be more beneficial to you if you can work with a pen and paper. Take down important lessons and information that fits your situation. Next, set a plan of action to achieve the emotional balance you so desire. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

Chapter 1
Understanding Emotional Intelligence
Life consists not in holding good cards but in playing those you hold well.
¶
- John Billings
A few years ago, I had a client who clearly was at the crisis stage in his life. He was on the verge of losing his job as a sales executive due to poor performance, and his marriage was experiencing turbulence. You could say John (not his real name) had hit rock bottom. Now, in the course of our discussions, there were basic questions I had to ask, added to the details he filled in his form.
John is a bit reserved. You could say he is an introverted person. But he is also brilliant. However, at the end of our first session together, one thing became increasingly clear to me; and that is, one of John’s problems was a low emotional intelligence level. Therefore, your social and relational skills are equally as important as your intellectual abilities.
Since Daniel Goleman published his work on emotional intelligence in 1995 the subject has become even more relevant to today’s society. Modern philosophers argue that we can achieve better work-life balance plus happiness once we can deal with our emotions and those of others around us too.
No doubt, your emotion is the fulcrum of almost anything you will do or become in life. Your ability to identify, understand, and manage your emotions will, therefore, determine the extent you will become fulfilled in life. Now, once we can resolve the internal conflict revolving around knowing ourselves better, we can then learn and understand how to relate with others in a social system without creating emotional conflicts. We are at peace with ourselves to the degree that we have been able to resolve the internal and external forces at play in our lives. Don’t forget that we are relational beings.
According to the Harvard Business Review, emotional intelligence is the critical ingredient that sets almost 90 percent of high achievers apart in terms of technical knowledge. In other words, to achieve or become all the above features we have mentioned so far we must relate as intelligent people. But that cannot be achieved fully without emotional intelligence as a necessity. What then is emotional intelligence?
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional intelligence (EI) is also known as emotional quotient (EQ). It is your ability to decipher how your emotions work and
