Introduction

In today’s fast-paced society, people generally find it difficult to achieve a balanced life. They cannot engage in every activity they wish they were able to do. Everyone wishes that they could balance their life when it comes to work, sleep, and social life. Start throwing in things like diet, activity, and good health, and you will find even more people who are struggling to find a balance. Many people work upwards of 8–12 hour shifts, if not more, and find it difficult to take a break long enough to choke down a sandwich, much less trying to create and eat a well-balanced meal.

Even our family life has become a rush. Who has time for more than a cup of coffee in the morning when you have to get kids, and maybe a spouse, ready for their day? The modern individual is continually on the move in terms of getting work done now but does that mean that we are on the move and staying active? Not really. Someone who spends an entire day at work can spend long hours in front of a computer staring at a screen with increasing levels of stress as well as other bodily problems that come with remaining stationary for extended periods. Combine that with a non-existent diet—surviving on coffee and energy drinks to get you through the day—or a terrible diet, where you are snacking on high sugar snacks or junk food because it is convenient.

Convenient. People have traded their health for foods that are convenient and quick. The leading cause of death in America, over 675,000, is due to eating unhealthily and low levels of activity (Center for Science in the Public Interest, 2016). Those that die generally suffer from preventable heart diseases, obesity, diseases associated with obesity, or lack of proper nutrition, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Sadly, over the course of 30 years, obesity has doubled in the adult population, tripled in children under 13 years of age, and quadrupled in adolescents. Obesity is avoidable if the correct nutrition and activity are achieved. Yet, why are these numbers rising? Because we are unwilling to relinquish our hold on foods that are full of added sugars, high in empty calories, and of little nutritional value.

Even when you are trying to eat healthily, you are often left with cravings
