Pamela Brown

Pamela Brown (1924–1989) was a British writer, actor and television producer. She was just fourteen when she started writing her first book, and the town of Fenchester in the book is inspired by her home town of Colchester. During the Second World War, she went to live in Wales, so The Swish of the Curtain was not published until 1941, when she was sixteen. She used the earnings from the books to train at RADA, and became an actor and a producer of children's television programmes.

    Preface

Ihave always been a writer. Even before I could write, I would write. Scribbling gibberish on endless pages, hoping that my loops and swirls would eventually form a word. (They didn’t.) My elder siblings quickly learned that the best way to occupy me while they completed their homework and chores was to place me at a table with pen and paper. It worked every time.

Poetry came later, during my eleventh summer. That was the summer that I had back surgery to mitigate the effects of scoliosis. I was not afraid, but my parents were. One day my mother presented me with a floral journal to write poetry. She thought it would help me through the upcoming procedure and recovery. (It didn’t.)
