      INTRODUCTION

      Authorship and Place within the New Testament

      Two quotations concerning Hebrews are endlessly repeated. In the early part of the third century Origen wrote, Who it was who wrote the epistle, [only] God knows the truth (Eusebius Hist. Eccl. 6.25.14). A modern writer adds, Hebrews is in many respects the riddle of the NT. Nothing is known of its origin.… It stands … ‘without father, without mother, without genealogy’ … like … Melchizedek … (Scott 1923: 1). The anonymity remains all the more surprising since without doubt the author of Hebrews ranks with Paul and the Fourth Gospel as one of the three great theologians of the NT (Lindars 1991:
