About this ebook
We took this sentiment to heart and have never regretted it.
Many trips and 17 cruises later, including a world cruise, we also certainly agree with Jawaharlal Nehru: “We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.”
Happy travelling.

About the Author
Although Herman and Pamela are now retired, they have both worked in many areas and businesses. These opportunities increased after they both upgraded their tertiary qualifications as mature age students. Herman was born in Delft, Holland and came to Australia in 1972. Prior to retirement, he worked as a Secondary School Information Processing Technology Teacher, teaching face-to-face classes and via the internet for 15 years. Prior to that, Herman has worked and studied in the areas of accounting, administration, management, taxation, small business and with a multi-national corporation. He has worked as an accountant, bursar, registrar, property manager and business manager, and has owned and operated several successful (and at times not-so-successful) businesses ranging from a bookshop, photographic business and two small farming enterprises. He is the author of several taxation and business books as well as publishing many professional papers and articles during his educational career.
His formal qualifications are: M Ed (Ed.Tech), B.A., Grad.Dip.Tax, Grad.Dip.Further Ed. and Train, Dip. Retailing, MACE.
Pamela is Australian born. Her formal qualifications are: Pamela Odijk, B.A., Dip. Lib.
In retirement, both have travelled extensively, mainly on cruise ships around the world, the Pacific, New Zealand, and of course Australia, where they live.

Princes Cruises particularly, Dawn Princess, Sea Princess, Sun Princess, their captains, staff and crew, particularly their tour operators and organisers. Their tour information presentations on-board provided passengers with lots of useful information including the experiences of former passengers.
New Zealand tour operators and bus lines, especially their on-board commentators and drivers whose professional and local knowledge was greatly appreciated, specifically in relation to their personal experiences of significant events, such as the Christchurch earthquake.
John van Tunzelman, who is a retired Department of Conservation Ranger with over 45 years in conservation work with much of his service spent in Fiordland National Park in the delivery of wild animal, fire control and law enforcement compliance work, along with search and rescue co-ordination. John was awarded the Queens Service Medal in 1994 for services to search and rescue. He has 17 years providing Port Information and Lecturing Services to International Cruise Ships visiting the West Coast Sounds of Fiordland National Park. We had the pleasure and privilege of meeting John while on-board and occasional communications since our last cruise. His on-board presentations and real time commentary through the various fiords, based on his years of experience in the area, was as entertaining as it was informative.
‘Tourism New Zealand’ is the organization responsible for marketing New Zealand to the world as a tourist destination. Their brochures, maps, and other information was excellent.
About This Book
Whether you visit and photograph the same place at different times, or different places each time, over the course of subsequent visits, a unique picture emerges of the changing character, i.e. spirit of the place, with all its beauty, honesty and often inherent quirkiness, and the people who belong there is something the tourist brochures can’t possibly show you, because that is not their objective. They want to show you the here and now and persuade you to go there and to find out for yourself.
And bearing in mind the sayings of Confucius about one picture being worth a thousand words, and all journeys beginning with the first step, this is what this book is all about. We want to show you what there is and will not miss if you ‘hasten slowly’. It took us four cruises around New Zealand on various ships, and taking different local tours each time, to compile this book of selected photographs.
We have attempted to portray the character of a place, its people and often the quirkiness of things, for no other purpose than to create interest. Our preferred modes of travel have been cruise ships and coaches for tourist trips. In later years, we added mobility scooters to our options when we found walking distances too
