    Day 1

    As Cathal drove home on Monday night, the weather was terrible.  A summer rain beat down in massive sheets, and visibility was minimal.  His 2010 VolksWagon Gulf used to be a great vehicle and still handled with the same German proficiency as when he bought it as an almost new used car, but now it had close to 200,000 miles on it, and he felt like he was driving through a monsoon.  The only reason he had purchased it was because he had loved Gulfs as a teen. Now, he missed the Porsche Cayenne he had totaled recently. And he couldn’t get another now.

    The tires on the Gulf had 40,000 miles of wear on them and weren’t gripping the road as they had years ago.  Got to replace them. But since he had driven the Porsche almost exclusively, he hadn’t bothered to replace these old tires. Now, he had no choice. Nothing like a DUI and a wrecked sports car to change my drive, he thought.

    Being the careful, dutiful driver that he saw himself to be—a few beers can’t hurt—he ignored the buzzing of his cell-phone.  Leave a message. Cathal was absolute in his determination never to text and drive.  Sure enough, the familiar chirping beeped out, signaling a voice message.  It would still have to wait until he got home.
