Marian Keen creates an appealing way for middle-grade students to learn about important historical figures. Readers will feel like they are dropped in to the surgical world, experiencing the frustrations and triumphs with Dr. Lister, as he makes important leaps in the medical field. What captures me in each of Marian’s stories in the Lexi collection is how playful they are, while holding onto accurate details. The books are clearly well-researched, and they teach so much. The stories bring the history to life in a way that children can connect to, sparking their curiosity and natural sense for fun.

I wish to express profound and sincere appreciation to John Dias, my son-in-law, for the inspiration and concept of the Lexi Catt Series, which brings to life the history of medicine. Alexander Catt II, also known as Lexi, is a wonderful spokes-feline, who has allowed me to share my interest in the health sciences with children. Thank you, John, for opening the door to these exciting adventures. Children now have the chance to become acquainted with some true heroes of history.

I wish to thank my daughters, Jodie Dias and Wendy Weston, for bringing the story to life with charming, whimsical visuals, while maintaining the historical truth.

I wish to thank Nancy Wickham for her meticulous attention to detail and clarity in editing my written words and her patience in dealing with my cockeyed humour.

I want my family to know that I appreciate their patience and support in this endeavour by never complaining about the long hours I spend on this project.

    Lexi Catt’s Meowmoirs

My name is Alexander Catt II, but people call me Lexi. I was born in Luxor, Egypt, during Ramses’ reign as pharaoh. My father was Alexander Catt, the adventurer, and my mother was called Ebony. I am all black like my mother, but I have a white muzzle, white paws, and a small tip of white on my talented tail. I have already lived eight of my nine lives and my purrpose now is to write the tails of my adventures in my meowmoirs like my father wrote his before me.

I have a peculiar attraction to trouble. Fortunately, the strange twitch of my tail warns me when trouble is near. For this reason, I have always tried to live with scientists or doctors of medicine over the centuries. You never know when you’ll need a doctor in the house!

In this tail of adventure, I live with a famous doctor of medicine, Joseph Lister, the Father of Modern Surgery. I will tell you how Joseph defeats death through handwashing and sterilizing
