I DEDICATE THIS BOOK TO THOSE POETS WHO I ADMIRED AND THE TEACHERS WHO HAVE INSPIRED ME.

    The Mighty Maple

    (OCTOBER 1996)

    Standing along the hostile lake,

    Rejoicing in thy majesty,

    With spreading branches all around,

    A bulwark against calamity,

The years have been unkind to thee,

    Erosion clawing at thy feet,

Earth dangles down in lumps and clumps.

Alas, for thee there’s no retreat.

The summer shade did welcome all,

You, Prince of Peace reigned serenely,

But autumn thieves stole all thy leaves

    Your golden beauty eternally.

    A glorious moment did appear,

    With springtime leaves so beautifully,

A gentle archway thou did form

    Touching the chestnut gracefully.

It was the wedding of ninety three,

A gift so rare thou did provide,

A lasting tribute to two betrothed,

Their love and thy glory abide.

    Now, awake!

    From your dream of life,

When you rejoiced and suffered too,

Kissed by the sun, rain and snow,

Your many off springs start anew.

    bg.jpg

    October Wind

    Your roaring sound I see

    Buffeting leaves up high,

    Darkness approaches,

    Obliterating cloudy sky,

    Leaves frantically seek perch,

    As they are tossed about,

    Reluctant trees in lurch,

    Nakedness, as they shout,

The lake you push from shore,

    Resist she every gust,

    Receding waves endure,

    Dry winds for water lust

    Stark silhouette of trees,

    Against a cloudy sky,

    A backdrop grey and grim,

    Thy picture dreary nigh,

    Oh! Wind of autumn clime,

    How noisily you rage,

    Presaging winter clime

    Natures messenger engage,

How cold and tight you grip,

    A menace you are. Go!

    From your embrace I slip

    Till calmness you bestow

    Calm Over Lake Ontario

    (Bronte, November 1996)

    Sweet stillness reigns

O’er land and sky and lake,

    A deafening silence,

    Deep sleep cannot arise,

    Of distant shores I dream,

    To space I travel,

    My wings are light dust,

    I reach my shining star,

    A sponge my brain is

    Nothing is out of
