ABOUT THE AUTHOR
INTRODUCTION
My son was building a house. One day, as I was observing what he was doing, it occurred to me that building a house was like building a life with God; similar principles applied. I got the idea to use the house metaphor and metaphors in the Bible to help explain what building a life with God involves. Jesus often used metaphors to teach many of God’s truths. For example, he used the metaphor of a camel going through the eye of a needle
to emphasize how difficult it is for a rich person to enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 19:23-24). He used a farmer’s seed to represent the word of God being sown in people’s lives (Mark 4:14-15). He used bread to say he is the bread of life (John 6:48-51). In this study, we shall use Biblical metaphors as building blocks for building a life with God.
The first chapter is introductory and discusses God’s use of three house metaphors to teach some of his truths. Each succeeding chapter represents another stage in the building process. When building a house, some preliminary things must be in place before we can successfully build, things like having a reason for building and making a plan. Knowing our goal and seeing what it will look like in the end certainly helps give us meaning, motivation, and a picture for what and how to build. Following those preliminary things, we start the actual construction work with a foundation. The foundation gives us a base to build upon before we gather and assemble all the parts needed to construct the house. The final chapter is all about perseverance, a necessary character quality if we are to finish well, for many discouraging problems are encountered along the way. All of these stages in building a house are involved in what it takes to build a meaningful life with God.
Building a life with God is a lifelong process. Each of us has differing circumstances and issues that will determine at what rate, or how well we progress in our maturity as a follower of Christ Jesus. God is patient with each of us. We need to accept one another and help one another, remembering that we are all at a different place in our development as a Christian.
Study Guides at the End of Each Chapter
(For individuals or groups)
Suggestions for leading a group: These study guides lead deeper into the subject. If you are leading a group, depending on time and interest, you may want to choose which items to discuss. It is important, however, to look up and read the Bible verses, thinking about answering, and discussing each of the related questions. The questions are for self-discovery in learning about the scripture texts, and for promoting meaningful conversation.
You, or others, may have additional questions that arise. It is good to take time for these. If no one knows the answer, someone may research it and come back later with an answer. Also, if the group is led to discuss a matter that is off the topic, or expands the topic, and it seems meaningful to the members of the group, allow discussion to continue before coming back to the study. Because individuals can study on their own at home, you don’t have to worry about finishing everything in the group meeting. Is it more important that the group enjoys each other
